Abstract On 2014 May 22 and 24 we characterized the volatile composition of the dynamically new Oort cloud comet C/2012 K1 (PanSTARRS) using the long-slit, high resolution (λ/Δλ ≈ 25,000) near-infrared echelle spectrograph (NIRSPEC) at the 10 m Keck II telescope on Maunakea, Hawaii.

From KBOs to Centaurs: The Thermal Connection
We present results of thermal evolution calculations for objects originating in the Kuiper belt and transferring inwards, to the region of the outer planets.

Testing the comet nature of main belt comets. The spectra of 133P/Elst-Pizarro and 176P/LINEAR [PDF]
We present the visible spectrum of MBCs 133P/Elst-Pizarro and 176P/LINEAR, as well as three Themis family asteroids: (62) Erato, (379), Huenna and (383) Janina, obtained in 2007 using three telescopes at "El Roque de los Muchachos"' Observatory, in La ...

Boulder Migration in the Khonsu Region of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko
The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission is the only space mission that has performed long-term monitoring of a comet at close distances. For over two years, Rosetta rendezvoused with comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, which revealed diverse ...

Terrestrial Analogs to Titan for Geophysical Research
Abstract Saturn's moon Titan exhibits remarkable parallels to the Earth in many geophysical and geological processes not found elsewhere in the solar system at the present day. These include a nitrogen atmosphere with a condensible gas—methane—replacing the Earth's water, leading to an active meteorology with rainfall and surface manifestations ...

Diurnal Ejection of Boulder Clusters on Comet 67P Lasting beyond 3 au
Ejection of large boulder-like debris is a vigorous form of cometary activity that is unlikely induced by water ice out-gassing alone but rather associated with the sublimation of super-volatile ices.

Measuring molecular abundances in comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) using the APEX telescope [PDF]
Comet composition provides critical information on the chemical and physical processes that took place during the formation of the Solar system. We report here on millimetre spectroscopic observations of the long-period bright comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy ...

Combustion and Pyrolysis EA‐IRMS Techniques to Determine the δ2H of Diamonds
ABSTRACT Rationale Diamonds are generally considered to be metasomatic minerals originating from the Earth's mantle. They formed through the interaction of carbon‐bearing fluids or melts with the surrounding deep lithology. Most knowledge about the formation of diamonds comes from studying their mineral inclusions or stable isotopes.

Activity of Halley-type Comets 12P/Pons–Brooks and 13P/Olbers from SOHO/SWAN Observations
The Solar Wind ANisotropies (SWAN) all-sky hydrogen Ly α camera on the Solar and Heliosphere Observatory (SOHO) observed the hydrogen coma of Halley-type comet (HTC) 12P/Pons–Brooks from SOHO’s halo orbit around L1 throughout its 2023–2024 apparition ...

Early Stages of Galilean Moon Formation in a Water-depleted Environment
A key feature of the Galilean satellite system is its monotonic decrease in bulk density with growing distance from Jupiter, indicating an ice mass fraction that is zero in the innermost moon Io and about half in the outer moons Ganymede and Callisto ...
