Surface-based computation of the Euler characteristic in the cubical grid

open access: yes, 2020
For well-composed (manifold) objects in the 3D cubical grid, the Euler characteristic is equal to half of the Euler characteristic of the object boundary, which in turn is equal to the number of boundary vertices minus the number of boundary faces.

On Hamiltonian cycles in the FCC grid

open access: yes, 2020
The face centered cubic (FCC) grid is a space-filling grid, one of the alternatives to the traditional cubic one. We show that there are five Hamiltonian cycles (non-equivalent up to rotation and symmetry), connecting the faces of a voxel in the FCC grid.

Young children's perspectives of time: New directions for co‐constructing understandings of quality in ECEC

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Children's relationship with time in preschools is an under‐researched area. Young children rarely know how to measure time using a clock, but their experiences of time may contribute to understanding children's well‐being and debates about quality in preschools.

Repairing 3D binary images using the FCC grid

open access: yes, 2019
A 3D image I is well-composed if it does not contain critical edges or vertices (where the boundary of I is non-manifold). The process of transforming an image into a well composed one is called repairing.

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Dimension-independent simplification and refinement of Morse complexes

open access: yes, 2012
Ascending and descending Morse complexes, determined by a scalar field f defined over a manifold M, induce a subdivision of M into regions associated with critical points of f, and compactly represent the topology of M.

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Theory of Change Review: A Report Commissioned by Comic Relief [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Comic Relief does three things. It raises much needed cash, it then allocates that cash to projects in the United States and in the poorest countries in the world, and it raises awareness of the issues it feels strongly about.
