Gut‐microbiota‐brain Axis and post‐traumatic epilepsy
Abstract There has been growing evidence that perturbations in gut‐microbiota‐brain axis (GMBA) are involved in mechanisms of chronic sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This review discusses the connection between GMBA and post‐traumatic epilepsy (PTE), the latter being a common outcome of TBI.

Abstract The intestinal microbiome plays a pivotal role in maintaining host health through its involvement in gastrointestinal, immune, and central nervous system (CNS) functions. Recent evidence underscores the bidirectional communication between the microbiota, the gut, and the brain and the impact of this axis on neurological diseases, including ...

Abstract Background Antimicrobials are commonly prescribed for the treatment of equine asthma, despite limited evidence supporting their use. Tracheal wash (TW) bacterial culture results are known to influence antimicrobial prescription decisions. Objectives To determine whether a positive TW bacterial culture in horses with asthma is associated with ...

Vaginal host–microbe signatures linked to placental outcomes in mares
Abstract Background Ascending placentitis is a leading cause of late‐term pregnancy loss in mares. Although pathogens are presumed to ascend from the caudal reproductive tract, the association between the vaginal microbiome and placentitis has not been systematically examined.

Bacteremia in horses undergoing routine dental prophylaxis: Before, during, and after the procedure
Abstract Background Transient bacteremia after dental procedures is well‐documented in the literature, but the prevalence and clinical significance in horses remains largely unexplored. Objectives To assess whether routine dental prophylaxis in clinically healthy horses is associated with detection of bacteria in blood, using culture and 16S rDNA ...

Diagnosis of bacteraemia in neonatal foals using 16S rRNA high‐throughput sequencing
Abstract Background Sepsis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in foals. Early diagnosis can improve outcome but is complicated by non‐specific clinical signs and delayed confirmation of infection via blood culture. Molecular assays represent a rapid and more sensitive alternative.
