Polarization analysis of retroreflection from commercial off the shelf (COTS) sensors

Technologies for Optical Countermeasures XIV, 2017
Previous work involved detection of retroreflected signals, focusing on polarization as a discriminator. We continue to explore the formalisms of the Stokes vector and Mueller matrix for characterization of retroreflection for common sensors such as commercial cameras.

Use of Plastic Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Microcircuits for Space Applications

2003 International Electronic Packaging Technical Conference and Exhibition, Volume 2, 2003
Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) plastic encapsulated microcircuits (PEM) are candidate-packaging technologies for spacecraft due to their enhanced performance, lower weight and lower cost. Much of the electronics used in space applications would be considered obsolete by everyday standards.

A framework to address the impact of system of systems integration using commercially off the shelf (COTS) technology [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of System of Systems Engineering, 2013
: For systems engineering, systems integration (SI) establishes linkages between hardware (HW), software (SW), products, services, processes and humans. Over the last decade the world of systems development has evolved rapidly particularly in the use of ...

Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS): Doing It Right

In the twenty-first century, the United States will likely encounter a wide-range of threats, such as those posed by terrorists, rogue states and other non-state actors—all of whom are taking full advantage of globally available, high-tech commercial systems (e.g., from night vision devices, through secure cell phones, to satellite photos). At the same

Impact of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software on the interface between systems and software engineering

Proceedings of the 21st international conference on Software engineering, 1999
This presentation examines the changes in the interface between systems engineering and software engineering which are required to make effective use of commercial off-the-shelf software products, especially in large or complex systems.

9.5.1 Evolving risks and use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components

INCOSE International Symposium, 2004
AbstractAs we continue to defend our nations, the increased use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) technology in military, infrastructure and other systems necessitates different approaches to address evolving risks and opportunities. COTS technologies have become far more capable over the last 10 years and that trend shows no sign of slowing. In fact,

Modified commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) antenna for satcom on-the-move (SOTM)

IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. MILCOM 2003., 2004
This paper describes a Ku-band transmit and receive small aperture antenna suitable for operation while on a moving high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) in the 11.7-12.2 GHz downlink and 14.0-14.5 GHz uplink fixed satellite service (FSS) frequency band.

Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), Global Broadcast Service (GBS), and the warfighter

MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings, 2002
A basic premise of the DoD Global Broadcast Service (GBS) is the leveraging of commercial technology and the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. Driven by the high cost associated with new development and "militarization", and the reality of decreasing defense budgets this trend is likely to continue and expand. It is important to ensure

ImpACT: An Alternative to Technology Readiness Levels for Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Software

2004
The use of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) as a tool in assessing acquisition and development program risk has steadily increased over the past several years. There is considerable evidence to support the utility of using TRLs as part of a risk assessment, but there are some difficulties in using TRLs with software, especially Commercial-Off-The ...
