New approach to environmental investigation of an explosive legionnaires´ disease outbreak in Spain: early identification of potential risk sources by rapid Legionella spp immunosensing technique

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2018
Background An explosive outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease (LD) was identified on 11 December 2015 in Manzanares, Ciudad Real, Spain, and was declared closed by 03 February 2016. The number of declared cases was 593 with 277 confirmed cases so that it can

Differential expression of cancer‐related genes supports prediction of poor response to first‐line treatments in T‐ALL pediatric patients with high minimal residual disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the present work, we have identified a transcriptional signature based on the differential expression of six genes (BCL2&MAST4, HSH2D&LAT2, METRN&PITPNM2) that would facilitate the early detection of T‐cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T‐ALL) patients prone to a poor treatment response and could be implemented at diagnosis, along with other risk ...

What knowledge and skills are needed for community volunteers to take on a signposting role in community-based palliative care? A qualitative study

open access: yesPalliative Care and Social Practice
Background: Community volunteers in palliative care (PC) have a unique position between healthcare professionals, community residents with care needs, and informal caregivers, offering complementary care and potentially playing a key signposting role ...

Application of antibiotics for the selective isolation of previously uncultured species from activated sludge

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
The microbial communities in activated sludge (AS) drive pollutant degradation and nutrient transformation into biomass and gaseous products, while also enabling resource recovery processes.

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

Tumor B‐cell infiltration in platinum‐treated advanced muscle‐invasive urothelial carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Bladder tumors with higher pretreatment memory B‐cell infiltration were linked to longer survival after cisplatin chemotherapy, but not carboplatin. These tumors also showed more organized immune structures (tertiary lymphoid structures) and a shared pro‐inflammatory B‐cell‐rich community, suggesting that memory B cells may help identify patients most ...

Constructing Reality: Comparing Simulation Modalities in Initial Teacher Education

open access: yesEducation Sciences
Simulation-based learning (SBL) is increasingly used within Initial Teacher Education (ITE) to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enhancing pre-service teachers’ (PSTs) preparedness for the complexities of classroom practice. Despite its growing

Cancer cell‐intrinsic type 1 interferon: production, signaling, and outcomes within sex‐biased, female malignancies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cell‐autonomous roles of interferon type 1 vary based on duration and intensity. While acute, robust signaling results in cancer cell cytotoxic effects, sustained, low‐level signaling is associated with tumor‐promoting effects. This review summarizes current research of IFN‐1 in cancer and within the clinical setting, with an emphasis on female ...
