A Multivariate Moran Process with Lotka-Volterra Phenomenology

open access: yes, 2011
For a population with any given number of types, we construct a new multivariate Moran process with frequency-dependent selection and establish, analytically, a correspondence to equilibrium Lotka-Volterra phenomenology.

Island time and the interplay between ecology and evolution in species diversification. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Research on the dynamics of biodiversity has progressed tremendously over recent years, although in two separate directions - ecological, to determine change over space at a given time, and evolutionary, to understand change over time.

Linking macroecology and community ecology: refining predictions of species distributions using biotic interaction networks

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2017
Macroecological models for predicting species distributions usually only include abiotic environmental conditions as explanatory variables, despite knowledge from community ecology that all species are linked to other species through biotic interactions.

Multi‐Enzyme Mimetic Molybdenum Nitride Nanozymes Reshape Subgingival Microenvironment for Synergistic Periodontitis Therapy via ROS Regulation and Microbiome Remodeling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease initiated and sustained by plaque microorganisms and host immune response, remains an intractable oral disease and a leading cause of tooth loss worldwide. Traditional mechanical debridement and adjunctive antibiotic or antiseptic therapy often shows limited efficacy due to the complex anatomical ...

Seeing the forest for the trees: Putting multilayer networks to work for community ecology

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, 2018
A framework for the description and analysis of multilayer networks is established in statistical physics, and calls are increasing for their adoption by community ecologists.

Gut Lactate Boosts Ruminococcus via Histone Lactylation to Mediate Time‐Restricted Feeding Protection in Crohn's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
TRF enriches Ruminococcus, a bacterial genus producing SCFAs, and activates the epithelial HIF‐1α signaling pathway. This mechanism protects the colonic mucosa from inflammatory insults in colitis models. Mechanistically, gut lactate production during starvation and refeeding mediates H4K12la, which increases SLC9A3 expression and creates an acidic gut

The role of stimulation, affection, and parenting patterns in stunting among children aged 24-59 months

open access: yesAcTion: Aceh Nutrition Journal
Stunting remains a chronic nutritional issue in Indonesia. The prevalence of stunting has decreased from 30,8% in 2018 to 21,5% in 2023; this rate is still above the WHO threshold of less than 20%.

Let's Make a Tubeworm! [PDF]

open access: yes
In this activity, centered on the ecology of a cold-seep community, students will investigate how deep-sea tube worms are adapted for a symbiotic relationship that allows them to survive.

Embracing Community Ecology in Plant Microbiome Research.

open access: yesTrends in Plant Science, 2018
Community assembly is mediated by selection, dispersal, drift, and speciation. Environmental selection is mostly used to date to explain patterns in plant microbiome assembly, whereas the influence of the other processes remains largely elusive.

Diversity of Pharmaceuticals Enhances Antibiotic Resistance in the Invertebrate Gut via Biofilm‐Mediated Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Pharmaceutical diversity acts as an independent driver of antibiotic resistance in soil invertebrates. While bulk soil remains unaffected, the collembolan gut microbiome exhibits significant resistance gene enrichment under complex chemical exposure and diurnal warming.
