Since thyristor cannot turn off automatically, line commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) will inevitably fail to commutate and therefore auxiliary controls or voltage control devices are needed to improve the commutation ...

Commutation Failure Analysis in Multi-Infeed HVDC Systems
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2011The commutation failure vulnerability of multi-infeed HVDC converters to ac side faults is analyzed. Faults in multi-infeed systems can cause commutation failure events in the nearby local converter or concurrently in both converters. The immunity of the system to both these events is investigated and suitably parameterized.

An Enhanced Strategy to Inhibit Commutation Failure in Line-Commutated Converters
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2020Failure of the commutation process is a serious malfunction in line-commutated high-voltage direct current (HVdc) converters, which mainly occurs due to inverter ac faults and may lead to outage of the HVdc system. In this paper, an improved strategy is developed that functions based on the SIEMENS HVdc control system under normal conditions and ...

Average-Value Modeling of Line-Commutated Inverter Systems With Commutation Failure
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2022Line-commutated converters are extensively used as the interface between ac grids and classic HVDC systems. At the inverter side, commutation failure of switches is one of the most common faults that can pose threats to the system operation. Practical and reliable study of such phenomena relies on accurate and efficient converter models for simulations.

Research on Commutation Failure of HVDC
Advanced Materials Research, 2013The waveforms of the RTDS(Real Time Digital Simulator) commutation failure and ABB MACH2 system commutation failure protection have been combined to analyze the mechanism of HVDC commutation failure. Several reasons for inverter commutation failure have been found, and a detailed analysis is also been given for the missing pulse and commutation which ...
