The Fate of Binaries in the Galactic Center: The Mundane and the Exotic

open access: yes, 2019
The Galactic Center (GC) is dominated by the gravity of a super-massive black hole (SMBH), Sagittarius A$^*$, and is suspected to contain a sizable population of binary stars.

Compact stars and the evolution of binary systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Chandrasekhar limit is of key importance for the evolution of whitedwarfs in binary systems and for the formation of neutron stars and black holes in binaries.Mass transfer can drive a white dwarf in a binary over the Chandrasekhar limit, which may lead to a Type Ia supernova (in case of a CO white dwarf) or an Accretion-Induced Collapse (AIC, in ...

Amyloidogenic Peptide Fragments Designed From Bacterial Collagen‐like Proteins Form Hydrogel

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study identified amyloidogenic sequence motifs in bacterial collagen‐like proteins and exploited these to design peptides that self‐assemble into β‐sheet fibers and form hydrogels. One hydrogel supported healthy fibroblast growth, showing promise for biocompatible materials. Our work demonstrates that bacterial sequences can be harnessed to create

A Multimessenger Mass Determination Method for LISA Neutron Star–White Dwarf Binaries

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Determining the masses of neutron stars (NSs) accurately improves our understanding of the NS interior and complicated binary evolution. However, the masses of the systems are degenerate with the orbital inclination angle when using solely gravitational ...

Atomic Layer Deposition in Transistors and Monolithic 3D Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Transistors are fundamental building blocks of modern electronics. This review summarizes recent progress in atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the synthesis of two‐dimensional (2D) metal oxides and transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with particular emphasis on their enabling role in monolithic three‐dimensional (M3D) integration for next ...

Rejuvenated Accretors Have Less Bound Envelopes: Impact of Roche Lobe Overflow on Subsequent Common Envelope Events

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
Common envelope (CE) evolution is an outstanding open problem in stellar evolution, critical to the formation of compact binaries including gravitational-wave sources.

Echoes of ECOs: gravitational-wave signatures of exotic compact objects and of quantum corrections at the horizon scale

open access: yes, 2016
Gravitational waves from binary coalescences provide one of the cleanest signatures of the nature of compact objects. It has been recently argued that the post-merger ringdown waveform of exotic ultracompact objects is initially identical to that of a ...

Multi‐Functional ZnO–Te Heterojunction Devices Enabling Compact Frequency Quadrupler

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Wafer‐scale ZnO–Te heterojunction devices featuring tunable double negative differential transconductance (D‐NDT) are demonstrated at ≤ 200°C. Leveraging this unique characteristic, a single‐stage frequency quadrupler is realized, achieving a 64%–75% reduction in device count.

Unlocking Photodetection Mode Switching from a Simple Lateral Design

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A simple lateral 2D perovskite photodetector capable of switching among transient, continuous, and dual transient/continuous photoresponse modes is achieved by integrating photoconductive effects with capacitive coupling from the SiO2/Si substrate. Such light‐programmable photodetection mode switching enables triple‐channel information transmission and
