New parameters in compact polarimetry for ocean target detection

IET International Radar Conference 2013, 2013
In this paper, we develop three new parameters for compact polarimetry to a particular application in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) maritime surveillance, i.e., the joint oil-spill and ship detection. Based on the X-Bragg rough surface scattering model, we investigate the capability of compact polarimetry, a dual-polarized system, for sea surface ...

Precision and widefield polarimetry with the Australia Telescope Compact Array

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2002
This paper describes some of the polarimetry done with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Comparatively low and stable instrumental polarization allows high quality polarimetric images to be formed. The instrument has proven particularly successful in studying low level circular polarization.

Compact static Fourier transform imaging spectropolarimeter based on channeled polarimetry

Optics Letters, 2010
The theoretical operation and experimental demonstration of a Fourier transform imaging spectropolarimeter for real time measurement of the polarization state of light are presented. The spectropolarimeter uses a Wollaston prism as a birefringent interferometer and two high-order retarders to incorporate channeled polarimetry.

Detection of wind farm using the relative phase of compact polarimetry SAR

2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
This paper discusses the potential for automatic ocean surveillance using compact linear polarization (CL-pol) SAR, with large area coverage, including high sea state conditions. Here, the target is a wind farm in the North Sea. The relative phase derived from CL-pol SAR is employed for detection of the wind turbines, apart from the wind turbines ...

Compact Polarimetry for Agricultural Mapping and Inventory: Preparation for Radarsat Constellation Mission

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has combined RADARSAT-2 C-band dual polarization data with optical imagery to map crop types across the agricultural extent of Canada yearly since 2009. In preparation for the launch of the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) primary research has been focused on incorporating similar-mode dual polarization RCM ...

Compact radar polarimetry for fire scar mapping and landcover classification

IET International Radar Conference 2013, 2013
Compact polarimetry (compact-pol) architecture is a new hybrid mode for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and is proposed for the future Canadian Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM) and the future Japanese ALOS-2 mission. The Compact-pol mode transmits single circular polarization (left/right) and receives simultaneous coherent orthogonal linear ...

The conformity coefficient or how to explore the scattering behaviour from compact polarimetry mode

2009 IEEE Radar Conference, 2009
In a previous paper, we have investigated the potential of the compact polarimetry mode at longer wavelengths in a space environment for soil moisture estimation. At longer wavelengths, one of the main challenges in dealing with compact polarimetry is the Faraday rotation estimation and correction.

Mapping and monitoring flooded vegetation and soil moisture using simulated compact polarimetry

2014 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2014
This paper shows that the m-chi decomposition, the Shannon-Entropy model and the Wishart-Chernoff distance can be used to map and monitor wetlands. Areas which changed from flooded vegetation to non-flooded vegetation were accurately mapped using the m-chi decomposition, and areas that changed from saturated soil to unsaturated soil were visible with ...
