Companding Schemes for Reducing PAPR in OFDM System: A Review

open access: yesJournal of Optical Communications, 2020
High PAPR poses a large hindrance to high data rate Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals. A companding transform converts the Probability distribution function (PDF) of the transmitted OFDM signal in a way which reduces the Peak-to ...

Spectral quantization by companding

IEEE International Conference on Acoustics Speech and Signal Processing, 2002
Recent advances in spectral coding for speech suggest Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) as a tool for designing close to optimal, single stage quantizers. This combined with companding techniques promises to give flexible, no-memory methods that are essentially rate universal.

OFDM Link Performance With Companding for PAPR Reduction in the Presence of Non-Linear Amplification

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Broadcasting, 2006
Use of companding for peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) control is explored for a link involving a non-linear transmit power amplifier with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).

A robust CMOS compander

IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, 1998
A robust CMOS compander circuit meeting all of the requirements for analog cellular telephony and using an improved sigma-delta compander topology is presented. Rather than digitizing and reconstructing the input signal using a sigma-delta modulator as has been done previously, only the amplitude path is digitized while the voice path remains analog ...

Log-linear companding—A digital companding technique

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1969
A new method of near-logarithmic companding is proposed. The method consists of first uniformly quantizing each sample and then processing the resulting binary number digitally. This is in contrast to the usual scheme of first compressing the input and then uniformly quantizing it. The method presented here is extremely simple to implement and requires

Autoencoder-based Image Companding

2020 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics - Taiwan (ICCE-Taiwan), 2020
This paper presents a deep learning-based method for effective image companding. The autoencoder inherits the effectiveness of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and residual learning framework to transform High Dynamic Range (HDR) images to Low Dynamic Range (LDR) and its reverse process.

Digital Companding Techniques

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1974
This paper deals with the requirements for the design of digital companding techniques in either delta or pulse-code modulation. Both delta and pulse-code modulation convert analogue signals into binary signals and in both these systems the dynamic range is normally small. By the use of companding, the dynamic range can be extended.

Estimation and Cancellation of Nonlinear Companding Noise for Companded Multicarrier Transmission Systems

Wireless Personal Communications, 2017
Nonlinear companding transform (NCT) is an efficient method to reduce the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of multicarrier transmission systems. However, the introduced companding noise severely restrains the bit-error-rate (BER) performance.

Hybrid Companding Delta Modulation

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1981
We present a reasonably complete account of an improved adaptive delta modulation (ADM) system called hybrid companding delta modulation (HCDM). The HCDM system that is far superior to continuously variable slope DM (CVSD) or constant factor DM (CFDM) is advantageous, particularly for speech coding. It employs both syllabic and instantaneous companding

On suboptimal multidimensional companding

Proceedings DCC '98 Data Compression Conference (Cat. No.98TB100225), 2002
A vector quantizer (VQ) consisting of a nonlinear mapping (compressor), a lattice VQ, and the inverse of the compressor (expander) is considered. While it was previously pointed out that in dimensions k>2 except for linear transformations and translations only reflections through reciprocal radii can preserve optimality in terms of the lattice cells ...
