Instantaneously Companding Digital Signal Processors
2007 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing - ICASSP '07, 2007We extend the technique of instantaneous companding (compressing and expanding) to digital signal processors (DSPs). Companding has been used for many years in non-dynamical channels, but the dynamical nature of DSPs causes output distortion in standard implementations of companding, where a compressor and expander are used at the input and output ...

Instantaneously companding integrators
Proceedings of 1997 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems. Circuits and Systems in the Information Age ISCAS '97, 2002The concepts behind instantaneously companding integrators are reviewed, and the context in which they may find use is discussed. Several examples of specific cases are offered, including log domain, square root domain and variable capacitance circuits. Several issues requiring attention are discussed.

Multidimensional companding quantization of the gaussian source
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2003Summary: Multidimensional companding quantization is analyzed theoretically for the case of high-resolution and mean-squared-error distortion. The optimality of choosing the expander function to be the inverse of the compressor function is established first. Heuristic derivations of the point density and moment of inertia of companding are given, which
