Burning characteristics of combat ship compartments and vertical fire spread

open access: bronze, 1988
This is a report to sponsor summarizing work accomplished under Naval Research Laboratory Contract N0017388WR80284 "Burning Characteristics of Combat Ship Compartments and Vertical Fire Spread." The computer program FIRST was employed to estimate levels of temperature, energy and heat transfer in burning compartments having features typical of Naval ...

Wave generation of a compartmented surface-effect ship

open access: closedJournal of Marine Science and Technology, 2010
A series of carefully controlled experiments on the wave-generation characteristics of a model of a compartmented surface-effect ship has been conducted in a towing tank. Configurations of the model included cases encompassing one subcushion and two subcushions, as well as differing values of the pressures in the subcushions.

Solving the ship inventory routing and scheduling problem with undedicated compartments

open access: closedComputers & Industrial Engineering, 2009
This paper addresses a ship inventory routing and scheduling problem faced by an oil company serving many locations. The problem involves the delivery of multiple products from loading to unloading ports by using heterogeneous types of limited numbers of ships. The nature of the products needs them to be loaded separately into compartments of the ships.

Representation of compartmented spaces for computer-aided ship design

Computer-Aided Design, 1984
The representation within a computer of such complex entities as ships is described. The representation is so constructed that it may be built up and changed as the design of the entity progresses. An entity may consist of any hollow polyhedron which is divided in two practical ways into compartments or spaces.

Long wavelength video detection of fire in ship compartments

Fire Safety Journal, 2006
Abstract This paper describes progress using filtered, long wavelength video image-based detection (LWVD) of events in laboratory tests and full scale fire testing within the Volume Sensor Program at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). This effort toward developing a real-time, remote sensing detection system utilizes video image detection (VID)

Fire Development and Smoke Propagation in Ship Compartments

Ship Technology Research, 2004
A numerical method to calculate fire development and propagation in ship compartments is proposed. The method uses coarse grids allowing relatively fast solutions (zonal model), featuring an improved treatment of walls between compartments. The method is validated against model tests and applied to a generic vehicle deck of a ro-ro ship.

On the equations of rolling motion of a ship with a flooded compartment

Ocean Engineering, 1983
Abstract This paper deals with obtaining the governing equations of rolling motion of a ship with a flooded compartment. The equations of motion are obtained through the variational formulation in the form of Hamilton-Ostrogradskii equation by taking the ship, the fluid in the flooded compartment and the sea as a single mechanical system.
