Barriers in the Brain: Resolving Dendritic Spine Morphology and Compartmentalization

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroanatomy, 2014
Dendritic spines are micron-sized protrusions that harbor the majority of excitatory synapses in the central nervous system. The head of the spine is connected to the dendritic shaft by a 50-400 nm thin membrane tube, called the spine neck, which has ...

cAMP signaling in blood platelets - old friends and new players.

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2015
Atherothrombosis, the pathology underlying numerous cardiovascular diseases, is a major cause of death globally. Hyperactive blood platelets play a key role in the atherothrombotic process through the release of inflammatory mediators and formation of ...

HIV Cerebrospinal Fluid Escape: Interventions for the Management, Current Evidence and Future Perspectives

open access: yesTropical Medicine and Infectious Disease
Neurocognitive impairment is an important cause of HIV-associated morbidity. The advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has shifted the spectrum of HIV-associated cognitive impairment from HIV-associated dementia to milder forms of cognitive impairment ...

Nanoclustering as a dominant feature of plasma membrane organization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Early studies have revealed that some mammalian plasma membrane proteins exist in small nanoclusters. The advent of super-resolution microscopy has corroborated and extended this picture, and led to the suggestion that many, if not most, membrane ...

Intestinal stem cell proliferation and epithelial homeostasis in the adult Drosophila midgut [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Adult tissue homeostasis requires a tight balance between the removal of old or damaged cells and the production of new ones. Such processes are usually driven by dedicated stem cells that reside within specific tissue locations or niches.

European Standard Clinical Practice Guideline and EXPeRT Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Management of Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms in Children and Adolescents

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pediatric gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP‐NENs) are extremely rare and clinically heterogeneous. Management has largely been extrapolated from adult practice. This European Standard Clinical Practice Guideline (ESCP), developed by the EXPeRT network in collaboration with adult NEN experts, provides (adult) evidence ...

Subcellular Compartmentalization of Glucose Mediated Insulin Secretion

open access: yesCells
Regulation of blood glucose levels depends on the property of beta cells to couple glucose sensing with insulin secretion. This is accomplished by the concentration-dependent flux of glucose through glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, generating ...

Clinical Insights Into Hypercalcemia of Malignancy in Childhood

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM) is a rare but life‐threatening metabolic emergency in children that occurs in less than 1% of pediatric cancer cases, with a reported incidence ranging from 0.4% to 1.0% across different studies. While it is observed in 10%–20% of adult malignancies, pediatric HCM remains relatively uncommon.
