Companion Dogs as Surrogate Family Members and the Compensation Hypothesis

Journal of Behavior, Health & Social Issues, 2020
The belief that bonding with companion animals seeks to substitute for human relationships has been widely held as common knowledge, receiving partial support even by scientific literature. This study aimed to assess the effect of compensation of lacking human bonds (i.e., partner and children) through bonding with companion dogs.

Alcohol and the Compensation Hypothesis: A Test with Cognitive and Psychomotor Tasks

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1990
An experiment tested the hypothesis that moderately intoxicated subjects can compensate for the detrimental effects of alcohol. Subjects were assigned either to a Control group, a Low Incentive group, or a High Incentive group. The dose of alcohol was 1.0 ml of 100% alcohol/kg body weight.

Multi-hypothesis motion compensation for low bit-rate video coding

IEEE International Conference on Acoustics Speech and Signal Processing, 1993
The author points out a major weakness of the conventional motion-compensated video compression paradigm-the assumption that the encoded information is sufficient to describe correct motion. He proposes a novel paradigm, based on multihypothesis expectations (MHE). Not only can conventional methods be reinterpreted as special cases at the MHE approach,

Analysis of multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction for robust video transmission

2004 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37512), 2004
The relationship between the error propagation effect and the hypothesis number of a multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction (MHMCP) coder is analyzed in this work. MHMCP enhances the error resilient property of compressed video but demands a higher bit rate for the coding of motion information.

Error Compensation for Single Pair-Pole Encoder Based on Ellipse Hypothesis

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
An error compensation method for the single pair-pole encoder has been discussed in this paper. This article analyzed offset, sensitivity error, quadrature error and ferromagnetic interference error of single-pole magnetic encoder to obtain the expression of each error. In order to facilitate error compensation, the common expression for describing the

Openness, External Risk, and Volatility: Implications for the Compensation Hypothesis

International Organization, 2007
A central assumption in the globalization literature is that economic openness generates economic insecurity and volatility. Based on this assumption, scholars of international political economy have proposed the compensation hypothesis, which claims that globalization bolsters rather than undermines the welfare state by increasing public demand for ...

A reexamination of the compensation effect in the mora hypothesis

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1988
The objective of this paper is to reexamine the compensation effect of the mora hypothesis in mora timing. An early investigation of the mora hypothesis presented the compensation effect in Japanese as evidence in support of the mora hypothesis [Port et al., Phonetica 37, 235–252 (1980)] and another presented contrary evidence against it [M.

The Determinants of Executive Compensation in Japan and the UK: Agency Hypothesis or Joint Determination Hypothesis? [PDF]

open access: possible, 2001
Although there are many studies on executive compensation, many of these studies often take for granted the 'Anglo-American style of corporate governance'. This paper seeks to contrast the effect of corporate governance on the directors' incentive, by comparing the UK and Japan.
