Competing Responses in a Discrete Mechanical System

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2014
This short paper takes a close look at a relatively simple harmonically-excited mechanical oscillator. Throughout the range of forcing frequencies the basins of attraction are investigated by applying strong perturbations to steady-state behavior. In this way, a more general solution space is mapped out.

Mechanisms for Human Spatial Competence

2007
Research spanning decades has generated a long list of phenomena associated with human spatial information processing. Additionally, a number of theories have been proposed about the representation, organization and processing of spatial information by humans.

Information Revelation in Competing Mechanism Games

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2011
We consider multiple-principal multiple-agent games of incomplete information. In this context, we identify a class of direct and incentive compatible mechanisms: each principal privately recommends to each agent to reveal her private information to the other principals, and each agent behaves truthfully.

Competing 3D Mechanisms in Compressor Flows

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2015
Even though three-dimensional design is central to all modern compressor design systems, many of these methods still rely, at the their core on a two-dimensional, sectional, view of blade aerodynamics. This paper argues that this view fundamentally limits design by not correctly considering the way in which pressure gradient transverse to the flow ...

Competing fatigue mechanisms in BPA-polycarbonate

Journal of Materials Science, 1985
A change in the mode of fatigue fracture in bisphenol-A-polycarbonate results in a large discontinuity in the fatigue lifetime of notched specimens. This discontinuity is such that the lifetime above the transition is at least an order of magnitudegreater than the lifetime below the transition.

Diffuse and localized failure modes: Two competing mechanisms

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2011
AbstractThe concept of failure is one of the most debated in soil mechanics, for two reasons essentially. First, this is a crucial issue in the engineering of structures and geotechnical project design. Second, this is still a challenging academic issue mobilizing significant scientific interest in the development of a unique framework to describe the ...

Competing Deformation Mechanisms in Nanocrystalline Metals

2004
The deformation of nanocrystalline copper and molybdenum has been simulated using molecular dynamics. Competing deformation mechanisms are observed in the simulations, including grain boundary sliding, dislocation motion, twinning and intergranular fracture.
