Distributional boundary values of analytic functions and positive definite distributions

open access: yesNonlinear Analysis, 2015
We propose necessary and sufficient conditions for a distribution (generalized function) fof several variables to be positive definite. For this purpose, certain analytic extensions of f to tubular domains in complex space Cn are studied. The main result

Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Tailoring Functional Properties of Ti–Ni–Cu Shape Memory Alloy Thin Films for MEMS Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A comprehensive study of critical parameters required to develop well‐performing Ti–Ni–Cu thin film shape memory alloy microactuators is provided. Materials science and device integration aspects are integrated by addressing structural and physical relationships using complementary characterization techniques as well as a practical fabrication solution

On complete monotonicity for several classes of functions related to ratios of gamma functions

open access: yesJournal of Inequalities and Applications, 2019
Let Γ(x) $\varGamma (x)$ denote the classical Euler gamma function. The logarithmic derivative ψ(x)=[lnΓ(x)]′=Γ′(x)Γ(x) $\psi (x)=[\ln \varGamma (x)]'=\frac{\varGamma '(x)}{ \varGamma (x)}$, ψ′(x) $\psi '(x)$, and ψ″(x) $\psi ''(x)$ are, respectively ...

On the Composition of Completely Monotonic Functions and Completely Monotonic Sequences and Related Questions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, 1983
The authors answer several previously open questions about c.m. (completely monotonic) sequences and functions. (1) If W(x) is c.m. on \([a,\infty)\) and \(\{\Delta x_ k\}\) is c.m. with \(x_ 0\geq a,\) then \(\{W(x_ k)\}_ 0^{\infty}\) is c.m. Also, the sequence \(\{\mu_ k^{\lambda}\},\quad\mu_ 0=1,\quad\mu_ k>0,\quad k=1,2,...,\) is c.m.

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Production of MgO/TiC Composites From MgO‐C Recyclates Using Spark Plasma Sintering

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Using the spark plasma sintering technique, MgO/TiC composites are manufactured from recycled MgO‐C refractories stemming from the steel production that were mixed with titanium powder. This article shows, how the size of the Ti grains and their distribution in the powder mixture affect the local carbon concentration in TiC.
