A high-throughput chemical screen identifies novel inhibitors and enhancers of anti-inflammatory functions of the glucocorticoid receptor

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Glucocorticoids (GCs)—ligands of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR)—are widely used to treat inflammatory diseases, but suffer from significant side effects and poor responsiveness in certain patient populations.

Centers of complex networks

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 2003
The central vertices in complex networks are of particular interest because they might play the role of organizational hubs. Here, we consider three different geometric centrality measures, excentricity, status, and centroid value, that were originally used in the context of resource placement problems.

Recurrent cancer‐associated ERBB4 mutations are transforming and confer resistance to targeted therapies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that the majority of the 18 analyzed recurrent cancer‐associated ERBB4 mutations are transforming. The most potent mutations are activating, co‐operate with other ERBB receptors, and are sensitive to pan‐ERBB inhibitors. Activating ERBB4 mutations also promote therapy resistance in EGFR‐mutant lung cancer.

From thread to yarn, and yarn to thread: a complex case of persistent left superior vena cava

open access: yesAnnales Academiae Medicae Silesiensis
Introduction: Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a rare venous anomaly, occurring in 0.3–0.5% of the general population and up to 4.3% of patients with heart defects. It forms from the junction of the left subclavian and internal jugular veins,

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

When dialects collide: how socioeconomic mixing affects language use

open access: yesEPJ Data Science
The socioeconomic background of people and how they use standard forms of language are not independent, as demonstrated in various sociolinguistic studies.

Complex Network Theory and Its Application Research on P2P Networks

open access: yes, 2016
Advances in complex networks of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks were reviewed and summarized. The paper outlines some important topological properties such as degree, average path length and clustering coefficient at first, and then three kinds of most ...

Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Identification of serum protein biomarkers for pre‐cancerous lesions associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...
