Planning an Healthcare Network: the case of Clinical Laboratories in Sicily

open access: yes, 2014
Healthcare centers, private and public, are responsible for serving health demand of the population. Typically their respective geographical location and size is the result of a complex interaction between epidemiological, historical and economical ...

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.

Ligand‐dependent transcriptional heterogeneity in cell cycle gene expression delays G1/S entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
EGF and HRG induce distinct G1/S progression programs in ErbB2‐amplified BT474 breast cancer cells. Despite activating the potent ErbB2–ErbB3 heterodimer, HRG does not accelerate cell‐cycle entry. Instead, EGF promotes earlier restriction‐point passage via ERK–FOS signaling, whereas HRG activates the AKT–MYC axis, driving transcriptional heterogeneity ...

Learning to build sustainable communities: an interdependency network perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper explores the production of sustainable communities from an interdependency network perspective (Newton, 2001). Drawing on fieldwork that examined how planners worked collaboratively with other professionals to address the challenges of ...

The Evaluation of Node Importance in Urban Road Network Based on Complex Network Theory

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2016
Identifying and protecting traffic hub is vital to keep the stability and reliability of urban road traffic network. In this paper, a comprehensive evaluation method of node importance in urban road traffic network was introduced based on identification ...

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

Modeling of complex-valued Wiener systems using B-spline neural network

open access: yes, 2011
In this brief, a new complex-valued B-spline neural network is introduced in order to model the complex-valued Wiener system using observational input/output data. The complex-valued nonlinear static function in the Wiener system is represented using the

A new approach for nuclear reactor analysis based on complex network theory

open access: yesProgress in nuclear energy (New series), 2019
In this work, complex network theory is applied for the first time in the field of nuclear reactor physics to present a new approach for the evaluation of the multiplication factor of a nuclear system.

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

A complex network approach to urban growth [PDF]

open access: yes
The economic geography can be viewed as a large and growing network of interacting activities. This fundamental network structure and the large size of such systems makes complex networks an attractive model for its analysis. In this paper we propose the
