Complex predicates are multipredicational, but monoclausal structures. They have proven problematic for linguistic theory, particularly for proposed distinctions between the lexicon, morphology, and syntax. This volume focuses on the mapping from morphosyntactic structures to event structure, and in particular the constraints on possible mappings.

Complex predication and serialization
2023AbstractThis chapter surveys complex predicate strategies in Australian languages, concentrating on light verb constructions and verb serialization. The chapter discusses the formation of these structures, the word classes that combine to form complex predication, the morphology that characterizes such constructions, and how they differ across the ...

Abstract A striking fact about Mohawk polysynthetic observed in chapter l is that although it puts great emphasis on agreement and noun incorporation, certain other kinds of morphological structures arc relatively restricted. Mohawk does not have the diversity of “ complex predicate” constructions that some languages have, and, more ...

Abstract Auxiliaries are defined as a closed subclass of verbs which (a) form part of one complex predicate in combination with an uninflected verb from a large open class; (b) take all the person, number, gender, aspect, tense, mood, and modality specifications required; and (c) impart a modal or aspectual meaning to the construction ...

How Complex Are Complex Predicates?
Syntax, 2007Abstract. This paper argues that clause union/restructuring constructions such as verb clusters in German do not involve head clustering in the form of (lexical or derived) complex head formation. I provide several arguments showing that clause union properties are licensed in the absence of complex head formation and that complex head formation hence ...

Complex Predicates in Arrernte
2012Using the example of Murrinh-Patha, Seiss (2011) illustrates how Australian Aboriginal languages can shed light on the morphology-syntax interface: one aspect of their polysynthetic nature is that information often encoded in phrases and clauses in other languages is instead found in a single morphological word.

Complexity in Predicative Arithmetic
2005Complexity classes between Grzegorczyk's E2 and E3 are characterized in terms of provable recursion in a theory EA(I;O) formalising basic principles of Nelson's Predicative Arithmetic. Extensions by inductive definitions enable full arithmetic PA and higher systems to be recaptured in a setting where the natural bounding functions are “slow” rather ...

We define a formal language for sortals with a lambda operator. By means of this language, a formal representation of the logical structure of complex sortal concepts and complex sortal predicates is possible. A formal semantics for the language is also defined together with a formal system. The system is proved to be complete and sound with respect to

This chapter will discuss translation problems that have “translation in context” as a common denominator. The expressions under consideration consist of more than one word. Translation of these words separately yields wrong results. Expressions that fit this denominator are idioms, translation idioms, complex predicates and collocations.
