Plasmodium vivax Induced Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome – A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Dilemma in Preeclampsia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2017
Malaria during pregnancy can cause various feto-maternal complications. Life threatening respiratory involvement is rare with vivax malaria but common with Plasmodium falciparum.

Periodic paralysis complicating malaria [PDF]

open access: yesPostgraduate Medical Journal, 1981
Summary Episodic muscular weakness, commonly associated with alterations of serum potassium, is the cardinal feature of periodic paralysis. The combination of transient hyperkalaemia and rigors occurring during febrile episodes of malaria is suggested as the underlying cause which precipitated the muscular paralysis.

Relative Susceptibilities of ABO Blood Groups to Plasmodium falciparum Malaria in Ghana

open access: yesAdvances in Hematology, 2016
The clinical outcome of falciparum malaria in endemic areas is influenced by erythrocyte polymorphisms including the ABO blood groups. Studies have reported association of ABO blood group to resistance, susceptibility, and severity of P.

Brain magnetic resonance imaging in imported malaria

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2019
Background Previous studies have documented a spectrum of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities in patients with cerebral malaria, but little is known about the prevalence of such abnormalities in patients with non-cerebral malaria.

Reduction of Sphingosine Kinase 1 Phosphorylation and Activity in Plasmodium-Infected Erythrocytes

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2020
Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive lipid mediator is involved in an array of biological processes and linked to pathological manifestations. Erythrocyte is known as the major reservoir for S1P as they lack S1P-degrading enzymes (S1P lyase and S1P

ALBUMIN COBALT BINDING OR ISCHAEMIA MODIFIED ALBUMIN: A TEST OF GREAT PROGNOSTIC VALUE IN MALARIA

open access: yesMediterranean Journal of Hematology and Infectious Diseases, 2017
Background :  We evaluated albumin cobalt binding (ACB) assay as a prognostic marker for severe malaria  in a medical college setting . Methods :Consecutive adult patients admitted with both vivax and falciparum malaria were evaluated with ACB assay at ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Genetic and epigenetic changes in host ABCB1 influences malaria susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Multiple mechanisms such as genetic and epigenetic variations within a key gene may play a role in malarial susceptibility and response to anti-malarial drugs in the population.

Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy in Bionanotechnology: Current Advances and Future Perspectives

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) enables the nanoscale mapping of electrostatic surface potentials. While widely applied in materials science, its use in biological systems remains emerging. This review presents recent advances in KPFM applied to biological samples and provides a critical perspective on current limitations and future directions for
