The Composition of Biological Membranes

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1972
The main components of biological membranes are proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates in variable proportions. Carbohydrates account for less than 10% of the mass of most membranes and are generally bound either to the lipid or protein components. Myelin has few functions and is made up almost entirely of lipids.

Membrane distillation by novel hydrogel composite membranes

Journal of Membrane Science, 2016
Novel polyelectrolyte hydrogel composites are developed by UV-initiated graft polymerization of acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (functional monomers) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (cross-linker), on polypropylene flat sheet membranes (support).

Composition of an amoeba plasma membrane

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1971
Abstract The plasma membrane of Acanthamoeba castellanii contains per mg of protein 0.6-0.7 μmoles of phospholipid, 0.81-0.98 μmoles of sterol, 1 μmole of non-lipid, organic phosphorus, and 1 μmole of carbohydrate (as glucose). Solutions of the lipid-extracted plasma membrane in 8 M urea separate on Sephadex G-200 into a voided fraction which ...

Composite Membrane Estradiol Implant

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1975
The diffusion and permeability of large organic molecules through polymeric films were investigated, specifically the passage of estrogen through films of polyethylene, silicone, or a composite of these two films. Such systems are of interest because of the possibility of constructing a biocompatible implant that releases a hormone at a controlled and ...

The Composition of Nervous Membranes

1968
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the four groups of compounds that occur mainly in nervous system and all of them are membrane constituents. These compounds are gangliosides, proteolipids, polyphosphoinositides and neurokeratin. Gangliosides are neuronal components; proteolipids, poly-phosphoinositides and neurokeratin are myelin components ...

Lipid Composition of Membrane Domains

2004
The isolation of subfractions of cell membranes on the basis of their solubility in non-ionic detergents has led to the discovery of lipid domain structure in membranes. Detergents used for this purpose include Triton, Brij, Lubrol and CHAPS. Different lipid constituents are known to resist solubilization by different detergents and the resulting ...

Composite Proton‐Conducting Membranes for PEMFCs

Fuel Cells, 2007
AbstractComposite membranes are of interest for PEMFCs and DMFCs. This paper describes a basic study of the influence of silica on the proton conductivity: (i) added as a filler to poly(vinylidene fluoride‐hexafluoropropylene) and poly(benzimidazole)‐based membranes activated with H3PO4, or (ii) included in the matrix of class II hybrids based on ...

Polyurethane Composite Membranes

Materials Science Forum, 2014
Fibrous nanostructured polyurethane composite membranes were developed using electrospinning process. Membranes of polyurethane having silver and zinc oxide as additives were prepared by electrospinning of solutions having dimethylformamide (DMF) or its mixture with tetrahydrofuran (THF) (50:50 volume ratio) as solvent.

COMPOSITE MEMBRANE

2004
The invention relates to a composite membrane comprising a sinter metal support (1) and a membrane layer (3) disposed on said support or on at least one intermediate layer (2). According to the invention, the sinter metal support (1) is provided with an anticorrosion material in order to increase the long-term stability of the composite membrane.
