Spherical Skin Model: Stratified Co‐Culture of Fibroblasts and Keratinocytes on Spherical Beads Toward Compound Screening

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Models of the human skin must combine the relevant biological contents and suitable biomaterials with the correct spatial organization. Performing compound screening on such in vitro models also requires fast and reproducible production methods of the models.

Tests on composite slabs and evaluation of relevant Eurocode 4 provisions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The paper addresses some key issues related to the design of composite slabs with cold-formed profiled steel sheets. An experimental programme is first presented, involving six composite slab specimens tested with a view to evaluating Eurocode 4 (EC4 ...

Optoelectrical Devices for Neural Interfacing: Engineering Integration, Stability, and Multimodal Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Implantable optoelectrical devices are an effective resource for the modulation and monitoring of neural activity with high spatiotemporal resolution. This review discusses current challenges faced by these devices and outlines future perspectives for the development of next‐generation neural interfaces targeting chronic, multisite, and multimodal ...

Mechanical behavior of a new type of reinforced concrete composite slab with a joint

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials
Composite slabs, consisting of a precast plank and a cast-in-situ concrete topping, are the most commonly used horizontal structural components in prefabricated buildings.

Taming the Immiscibility of Gold, Iron, and Boron to Craft Chemodegradable Nanoparticles for Multimodal Imaging and Radiotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Over half of cancer patients undergo radiotherapy. Laser ablation enabled the synthesis of immiscible Au‐Fe‐B nanoparticles designed as degradable bimodal radiosensitizers for X‐ray radiotherapy (XRT), boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), and bimodal imaging for X‐ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These nanosensitizers

Optimum design of composite prestressed concrete girder railway bridges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper deals with the formulation of design optimisation of pretsressed concrete bridges. The bridge is of a slab-on-girder type, hence modeled as an equivalent orthotropic plate.

3D Soft Hydrogels Induce Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells “Deep” Quiescence

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Three‐dimensional soft hydrogels mimicking the bone marrow niche induce deep quiescence in human mesenchymal stem cells. Unlike 2D culture, 3D matrices halt proliferation, regulate cell‐cycle and quiescence markers, and downregulate mTORC1 signaling, preserving stem cell phenotype and therapeutic potential ex vivo.

Load Capacities of Steel and Concrete Composite Bridge Deck Slab with Haunch

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2017
An innovative steel and concrete composite bridge deck slab using bent bars and epoxy as shear connectors was proposed. Four slab specimens with different types of concrete were fabricated and tested to study the load capacities of positive and negative ...

Control of superluminal transit through a heterogeneous medium

open access: yes, 2009
We consider pulse propagation through a two component composite medium (metal inclusions in a dielectric host) with or without cavity mirrors. We show that a very thin slab of such a medium, under conditions of localized plasmon resonance, can lead to ...
