Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Compression of ultrashort UV pulses in a self-defocusing gas

open access: yes, 2009
Compression of UV femtosecond laser pulses focused into a gas cell filled with xenon is reported numerically. With a large negative Kerr index and normal dispersion, xenon promotes temporal modulational instability (MI) which can be monitored to shorten ~

Designing microstructured polymer optical fibers for cascaded quadratic soliton compression of femtosecond pulses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The dispersion of index-guiding microstructured polymer optical fibers is calculated for second-harmonic generation. The quadratic nonlinearity is assumed to come from poling of the polymer, which in this study is chosen to be the cyclic olefin copolymer

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

A Study on Developing a Model for Predicting the Compression Index of the South Coast Clay of Korea Using Statistical Analysis and Machine Learning Techniques

open access: yesApplied Sciences
As large cities are continually being developed around coastal areas, structural damage due to the consolidation settlement of soft ground is becoming more of a problem.

The Dynamic Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis for Breast Cancer–related Lymphedema without Compression: Salvaging Lymphedema Patients Who Lost Conservative Treatment Opportunity

open access: yesPlastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Global Open, 2023
Background:. In conservative treatment for breast cancer–related lymphedema (BCRL), compression therapy has a crucial role. However, some BCRL patients are unable to use compression, and then their lymphedema continues to worsen as they miss treatment ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Effect of Degree of Saturation on Consolidation Parameters of Fine-Grained Soils

open access: yesBulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
Terzaghi (1943)'s theory of consolidation phenomenon has some limitations for unsaturated geological environments in nature. Additionally, soils are subjected to consolidation tests under partially saturation conditions.
