Assessment of Skin in Patients With Systemic Sclerosis Using High‐Frequency Ultrasound and Shear Wave Elastography: A Comparative Study With Histology, Molecular, and Clinical Parameters

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Ultrasound (US) has been proposed as a potential tool for assessing skin fibrosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc). However, a large‐scale comparison of US‐based assessment with histologic markers of skin fibrosis has not been reported. We evaluated US‐based skin assessments for their face validity (differentiation between involved SSc and healthy

Enhancing Mechanical Response of Monolithic Magnesium Using Nano-NiTi (Nitinol) Particles

open access: yesMetals, 2018
The present study focuses on investigating the effects of Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) nanoparticles on the microstructure and properties of pure Mg. Mg composites containing varying weight percentages (0.5, 1, 1.5, 3) of NiTi nanoparticles were fabricated ...

Bistable Mechanisms 3D Printing for Mechanically Programmable Vibration Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a 3D‐printed bistable mechanism integrated into tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for mechanically adaptive passive vibration suppression. Through optimized geometry, the bistable design provides adaptable vibration reduction across a broad range of scenarios, achieving effective vibration mitigation without complex controls or external ...

Preparation and Evaluation of Microstructure, Compressive and Tensile Strength of Vinyl Ester/Glass Micro Balloon Foams [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Materials in Engineering
Syntactic foams consisting of vinyl ester resin hollow glass microspheres (microballoons) are used in many marine or air structures due to their low density, high stiffness/density ratio, and ability to absorb energy.

Static compression and compression-compression fatigue properties of plain woven composite laminates

open access: yesJournal of Aeronautical Materials, 2022
The static compression and compression-compression fatigue tests of glass fiber plain woven composite laminates were carried out on an electro-hydraulic servo fatigue testing machine. The stress ratio was R=10, and the S-N curve was fitted. The fatigue damage evolution was characterized by stiffness degradation, energy dissipation, cyclic creep and ...

Ceramic identity contributes to mechanical properties and osteoblast behavior on macroporous composite scaffolds. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Implants formed of metals, bioceramics, or polymers may provide an alternative to autografts for treating large bone defects. However, limitations to each material motivate the examination of composites to capitalize on the beneficial aspects of ...

Dynamic Precipitation during High‐Pressure Torsion of a Magnesium–Manganese Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrafine‐grained alloy is produced by high‐pressure torsion of solutionized Mg–1.35 wt% Mn. Precipitation of nanometer‐scale Mn particles during deformation provides pinning sites. This prevents the formation of a bimodal grain structure and results in a finer grain size than for pure Mg.

Understanding the Effect of Resistance Temperature Detector Temperature Controllers on Microstructural Alignment in Magnetic Freeze Casting

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The effect of temperature controllers that are commonly used in freeze‐casting is investigated in this work. Temperature controllers are observed to generate a voltage in the slurry. Microstructural alignment and ultimate compressive strength data show this voltage to interfere with the ability to align the microstructure using magnetic fields ...
