Following a suggestion of A. Kitaev, we explore the connection between fault-tolerant quantum computation and nonabelian quantum statistics in two spatial dimensions. A suitably designed spin system can support localized excitations (quasiparticles) that exhibit long-range nonabelian Aharonov-Bohm interactions.
