Speech Recognition for the Sterile Interaction with Information Systems in the Surgical Area

open access: yesCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering
This paper describes how automatic speech recognition (ASR) can be used to explore electronic patient records (EPR) in a sterile environment. As an information display, we used a system that was developed for the presentation of patient data and for ...

COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING IN ACTION [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1969
What I have beenl asked to talk about today are some of the recent developmeiits in computer-assisted instruction (CAI). I shall not be talking about the scientific problems associated with devising effective pedagogical methods, but rather about applications that have been made of CAl.

Neutrophil deficiency increases T cell numbers at the site of tissue injury in mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In wild‐type mice, injury or acute inflammation induces neutrophil influx followed by macrophage accumulation. Mcl1ΔMyelo (neutrophil‐deficient) mice lack neutrophils, and in response to muscle injury show fewer macrophages and exhibit strikingly elevated T‐cell numbers, primarily non‐conventional “double‐negative” (DN) αβ and γδ T cells.

Computer-assisted proofs

open access: yes12th GAMM - IMACS International Symposium on Scientific Computing, Computer Arithmetic and Validated Numerics (SCAN 2006), 2006
This paper discusses the problem what makes a computer-assisted proof trustworthy, the quest for an al- gorithmic support system for computer-assisted proof, re- lations to global optimization, an analysis of some recent proofs, and some current challenges which appear to be amenable to a computer-assisted treatment.

Functional role and folding properties of the glucan‐binding domain of oral bacterial glucansucrase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The role of the glucan‐binding domain in Streptococcus sobrinus glucansucrase was examined, focusing on its impact on enzymatic activity, dextran binding, and structural stability of deletion mutants and a circularly permuted protein. Our research revealed that glucosyl transfer efficiency is linked to cooperative interdomain folding.

Computer assisted mathematical programming [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
A Computer Assisted Mathematical Programming (Modelling) System (CAMPS) is described in this paper. The system uses program generator techniques for model creation and contrasts with earlier approaches which use a special purpose language to construct ...

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

Computer-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery: Current State and Future Perspective

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery, 2015
Introduced about two decades ago, computer-assisted orthopedic surgery (CAOS) has emerged as a new and independent area, due to the importance of treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in orthopedics and traumatology, increasing availability of different ...

Ergothioneine supplementation improves pup phenotype and survival in a murine model of spinal muscular atrophy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease affecting motor neurons. Individuals with SMA experience mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of an antioxidant and neuroprotective substance, ergothioneine (ERGO), on an SMNΔ7 mouse model of SMA.

On the Effect of Inter-observer Variability for a Reliable Estimation of Uncertainty of Medical Image Segmentation

open access: yes, 2018
Uncertainty estimation methods are expected to improve the understanding and quality of computer-assisted methods used in medical applications (e.g., neurosurgical interventions, radiotherapy planning), where automated medical image segmentation is ...
