Animation and prior knowledge in a multimedia application: A case study on undergraduate computer science students in learning

2012 Second International Conference on Digital Information and Communication Technology and it's Applications (DICTAP), 2012
We conducted two experiments to examine the effects that prior knowledge and different types of animation have on student understanding. Students were identified as either low or high prior knowledge from a series of questions asked in a prior knowledge survey conducted on computer science undergraduate students.

Multimedia learning in computer science: The effect of fifferent modes of instruction on student understanding

2008 International Symposium on Information Technology, 2008
In a series of three experimental studies, we investigate the understanding achieved by learners when studying a complex domain in computer science, that is, the subject of memory management concepts in operating systems. We use three different media combinations to explain the subject of memory management concepts - Animation and text, animation and ...

Pedagogical dimensions and the evaluation of multimedia courseware for computer science

Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. Teaching and Learning in an Era of Change, 2002
Fourteen dimensions have been listed for evaluating the pedagogy of multimedia courseware in literature. Each of these dimensions is a continuum between two contrasting approaches. A courseware could qualify anywhere along the continuum for each dimension, depending on its features.

The computer sciences electronic magazine

Proceedings of the SIGCHI conference on Human factors in computing systems - CHI '92, 1992
In this paper, we discuss issues in design and usability of the IBM Computer Sciences Electronic Magazine (CSEM). The CSEM is an interactive multimedia translation of a paper magazine. It contains articles describing Computer Sciences projects at the four IBM Research Labs. Combining aspects from print, television, and computers, it is a useful vehicle

Use of collaborative multimedia in computer science classes

Proceedings of the 6th annual conference on Innovation and technology in computer science education, 2001
While there is a lot of speculation about the benefits of multimedia exploration, research on learning and technology suggests that the creation of media by students has even greater benefit for learning. Students learn through articulating their knowledge in their multimedia documents, reviewing their own work, and

A course on multimedia technology for computer science and computer engineering students

Proceedings of the twenty-eighth SIGCSE technical symposium on Computer science education, 1997
We have developed a new course on Multimedia Technology, intended for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students majoring in either Computer Science or Computer Engineering. In this paper we describe the topics covered, the method of instruction, the work done by the students, and the facilities needed to teach such a course.

Web-based multimedia development techniques for the instruction of abstract concepts in computer science

Proceedings International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2002
Advances in information technology have provided educators with the tools needed to present abstract concepts in a clear and concise manner. These tools can be particularly effective in the field of computer science where the dynamic processes of algorithms must be conveyed to students at all course levels.
