Explainable clinical diagnosis through unexploited yet optimized fine-tuned ConvNeXt Models for accurate monkeypox disease classification

open access: yesSLAS Technology
Deep learning (DL) has had an incredible influence on many different scientific areas over the past couple of decades. Particularly in the field of healthcare, DL strategies were able to outclass other existing methodologies in image processing.

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Plasma extrachromosomal circular DNA as a biomarker in EGFR‐targeted therapy of non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Detection of extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) in plasma samples from EGFR‐mutated non‐small cell lung cancer patients. Plasma was collected before and during treatment with the EGFR‐tyrosine kinase inhibitor osimertinib. Plasma eccDNA was detected in all cancer samples, and the presence of the EGFR gene on eccDNA serves as a potential biomarker ...

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).

Methodology for determining the amount of ferrite and pearlite in cast iron using standard computer image processing programs

open access: yesLitiyo i Metallurgiya (FOUNDRY PRODUCTION AND METALLURGY)
Standard GOST 3443–87 used in metallurgical practice does not permit an accurate quantitative assessment of the content of pearlite and ferrite in the structure of cast iron while specialized software for computer image analysis is rather expensive, are not available to all enterprises and, moreover, require highly qualified staff. In this work, a new ...

Improving PARP inhibitor efficacy in bladder cancer without genetic BRCAness by combination with PLX51107

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Clinical trials on PARP inhibitors in urothelial carcinoma (UC) showed limited efficacy and a lack of predictive biomarkers. We propose SLFN5, SLFN11, and OAS1 as UC‐specific response predictors. We suggest Talazoparib as the better PARP inhibitor for UC than Olaparib.
