Towards an understanding of the structural determinants of oral health inequalities: A comparative analysis between Canada and the United States

open access: yesSSM: Population Health, 2016
Objective: To compare the magnitude of, and contributors to, income-related inequalities in oral health outcomes within and between Canada and the United States over time.

Concentration Inequalities for Smooth Random Fields [PDF]

open access: yesTheory of Probability & Its Applications, 2013
In this note we derive a sharp concentration inequality for the supremum of a smooth random field over a finite dimensional set. It is shown that this supremum can be bounded with high probability by the value of the field at some deterministic point plus an intrinsic dimension of the optimisation problem.

Global and Regional Temporal Changes in Cross‐Country Inequalities of Site‐Specific Osteoarthritis Burden, 1990 to 2021

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective This study examined the global and regional temporal changes in cross‐country inequalities of site‐specific osteoarthritis (OA) burden from 1990 to 2021. Methods Age‐standardized years lived with disability rates (ASYRs) for site‐specific OA across 204 countries and territories were obtained from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and ...

Assessing changes in social determinants of health inequalities in South Africa : a decomposition analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal for Equity in Health, 2018
Background Despite various policy interventions that have targeted reductions in socio-economic inequalities in health and health care in post-Apartheid South Africa, evidence suggests that not much has really changed. In particular, health inequalities,

Inequalities in cognitive impairment among older adults in China and the associated social determinants: a decomposition approach

open access: yesInternational Journal for Equity in Health, 2021
Background Despite there is growing evidence focusing on health inequalities in China, socioeconomic inequalities in cognitive impairment among older adults have received little attention.

Optimal Concentration Inequalities for Dynamical Systems [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications in Mathematical Physics, 2012
For dynamical systems modeled by a Young tower with exponential tails, we prove an exponential concentration inequality for all separately Lipschitz observables of n variables. When tails are polynomial, we prove polynomial concentration inequalities. Those inequalities are optimal. We give some applications of such inequalities to specific systems and

A Q‐Learning Algorithm to Solve the Two‐Player Zero‐Sum Game Problem for Nonlinear Systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 566-581, March 2025.
A Q‐learning algorithm to solve the two‐player zero‐sum game problem for nonlinear systems. ABSTRACT This paper deals with the two‐player zero‐sum game problem, which is a bounded L2$$ {L}_2 $$‐gain robust control problem. Finding an analytical solution to the complex Hamilton‐Jacobi‐Issacs (HJI) equation is a challenging task.

Addressing the huge poor-rich gap of inequalities in accessing safe childbirth care: A first step to achieving universal maternal health coverage in Tanzania.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
IntroductionDespite skilled attendance during childbirth has been linked with the reduction of maternal deaths, equality in accessing this safe childbirth care is highly needed to achieving universal maternal health coverage.

Coupling, concentration inequalities, and stochastic dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Physics, 2008
In the context of interacting particle systems, we study the influence of the action of the semigroup on the concentration property of Lipschitz functions. As an application, this gives a new approach to estimate the relaxation speed to equilibrium of interacting particle systems.

Hopfield Neural Networks for Online Constrained Parameter Estimation With Time‐Varying Dynamics and Disturbances

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
This paper proposes two projector‐based Hopfield neural network (HNN) estimators for online, constrained parameter estimation under time‐varying data, additive disturbances, and slowly drifting physical parameters. The first is a constraint‐aware HNN that enforces linear equalities and inequalities (via slack neurons) and continuously tracks the ...
