Ethnic diversity, concentration of political power and the curse of natural resources

Economia Politica, 2022
The empirical evidence suggests that the resource rich countries tend to have poor economic perfor- mance and higher rent seeking. In this paper, we develop a general equilibrium model explaining why natural resources turn out to be a curse in an economy divided into two classes: elite and workers.

Resource utilization of natural pyrite (FeS2) as the tailings after flotation of natural sphalerite (ZnS) for reclaiming high concentrations of gaseous Hg0 from Zn smelting flue gas

Chemical Engineering Journal, 2022
Abstract Reducing Hg emissions from Zn smelting flue gas (Zn-SFG) is rigorously stipulated by the Minamata Convention. Currently, a little natural pyrite (FeS2) as the tailings after flotation of natural sphalerite (ZnS) is often regarded as solid wastes and discarded; therefore, another utilization of these natural FeS2 is preferable. In this study,

The Effects of Natural Resources on Urbanization, Concentration, and Living Standards in Africa

World Development, 2017
Summary This paper examines the effects of natural resource abundance on urbanization and living standards in Africa. Our central hypothesis is that the exploitation of natural resources in a context of poor governance quality creates the conditions for rapid urbanization and urban concentration, and ultimately lowers living standards in primal ...

Types, Concentration, Diffusion and Spatial Structure Evolution of Natural Gas Resource Flow in China

Journal of Resources and Ecology, 2016
This paper analyzed the development of different types of natural gas flow zones in China, and then di- vided all provinces into four flow types: non-flow zones, output centers, input centers and exchanging centers. Next, we analyzed the concentration and diffusion characteristics, current spatial pattern and evolution of source and terminal regions of

Evaluation of a sequential biological concentration system in natural resource management of a saline irrigated area

Australasian Journal of Water Resources, 2005
Waste-water need not be disposed to an evaporation basin until all useful benefit has been extracted from the waste stream. Sequential Biological Concentration (SBC) of saline drainage streams offers the ability to create a number of financial opportunities, whilst concentrating the waste stream to a manageable volume. In this paper, we present field

The Urban Concentration of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Agricultural and Natural Resource Industries

2019
This study draws on detailed information on inventor address from 34,196 patented biotechnology inventions, made in the United States between 1970 and 2010, as indicators of innovation and entrepreneurship in three largely rural industries—(1) agriculture, (2) bioenergy, and (3) environment.

Natural CO2 springs in Italy: a resource for examining long‐term response of vegetation to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations

Plant, Cell & Environment, 1993
ABSTRACTIt is estimated that more than 100 geothermal CO2 springs exist in central‐western Italy. Eight springs were selected in which the atmospheric CO2 concentrations were consistently observed to be above the current atmospheric average of 354μmol mol‐1. CO2 concentration measurements at some of the springs are reported.
