Conceptual Spaces as Voltage Maps

2001
Conceptual spaces have been proposed as a meso level representation, intermediate between symbolic and connectionist representations. We define a conceptual space to be a set of images or "voltage maps" on a compact sub plane, and equip it with pseudo-physiological notions of distance and betweenness.

Sentence Induced Transformations in "Conceptual" Spaces

2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing, 2008
The proposed work illustrates how "primitive concepts" can be automatically induced from a text corpus. The primitive concepts are identified by the orthonormal axis of a "conceptual" space induced by a methodology inspired to the latent semantic analysis approach. The methodology represents a natural language sentence by means of a set of rotations of

Conceptual Spaces as Philosophers’ Tools

2015
This paper gives an overview of the main philosophical applications to which conceptual spaces have been put. In particular, we show how they can be used to (i) resolve in a uniform way the so-called paradoxes of identity, which are basically problems concerning material constitution and change over time; (ii) answer one of the core questions in the ...

Exemplars, Prototypes and Conceptual Spaces

2013
This paper deals with the problem of the computational representation of “non classical” concepts, i.e. concepts that do not admit a definition in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions (sect. 1). We review some empirical evidence from the field of cognitive psychology, suggesting that concept representation is not an unitary phenomenon.

Fuzzy modeling of conceptual spaces

1997
It is introduced a new concept: H-sets which generalises the notion of fuzzy sets and is based on the concept of hemilattice. Then, we extend the attribute-value conceptual spaces over hemilattices, which gives us a kind of H-set, and prove some of their properties.

From Conceptual Spaces to Predicates

2015
Why is a red face not really red? How do we decide that this book is a textbook or not? Conceptual spaces provide the medium on which these computations are performed, but an additional operation is needed: Contrast. By contrasting a reddish face with a prototypical face, one gets a prototypical ‘red’.

Modelling Comparative Concepts in Conceptual Spaces

2013
The conceptual spaces approach has emerged as a new and powerful way of thinking about concepts. In earlier work, the present authors have addressed the question of how to model vague concepts in the conceptual spaces framework. That in turn was instrumental in Decock's and Douven's account of a graded membership relation in further work. In this paper,

Cooperation, Conceptual Spaces and the Evolution of Semantics

2006
We start by providing an evolutionary scenario for the emergence of semantics. It is argued that the evolution of anticipatory cognition and theory of mind in the hominids opened up for cooperation about future goals. This cooperation requires symbolic communication.
