This paper describes the essential cognitive and neurobiological relationships between spatial structure (SpS) and conceptual structure (CS), as relevant for language. We provide evidence that SpS and its underlying anatomical regions (ventral premotor cortex and posterior parietal cortex) are the essential evolutionary precursors of CS and the brain ...

Within cognitive science, two approaches currently dominate the problem of modeling representations. The symbolic approach views cognition as computation involving symbolic manipulation. Connectionism, a special case of associationism, models associations using artificial neuron networks. Peter Gärdenfors offers his theory of conceptual representations

Multidimensional Conceptual Spaces for Summarization
2006 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, 2006Conceptual spaces have been introduced to provide a geometrical knowledge representation. Based on it and on the fuzzy graph representation on unit space, J. T. Rickart proposed a 2-dimensional concept matrix representation across the domains used to define a concept. This paper proposes a multidimensional extension of this concept matrix.

A Metric Conceptual Space Algebra
2009The modeling of concepts from a cognitive perspective is important for designing spatial information systems that interoperate with human users. Concept representations that are built using geometric and topological conceptual space structures are well suited for semantic similarity and concept combination operations.

Conceptualizing and Mapping Geocultural Space
International Journal of Humanities and Arts Computing, 2015This essay seeks to critically conceptualize the term geocultural space and the emerging field of study with which it is associated by exploring the various ways in which such space is currently being mapped by researchers using digital humanities tools and methods.

how to learn a conceptual space
Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2005the experiments proposed in the article by steels & belpaeme (s&b) can be considered as a starting point toward a general methodology for the automatic learning of conceptual spaces.

Conceptual Spaces as Voltage Maps
2001Conceptual spaces have been proposed as a meso level representation, intermediate between symbolic and connectionist representations. We define a conceptual space to be a set of images or "voltage maps" on a compact sub plane, and equip it with pseudo-physiological notions of distance and betweenness.
