Insights from Soft Condensed Matter

Reviews of Modern Physics, 1999
The physicist’s method of reflection about the world has, especially in this century, opened our eyes to the world as have few activities in history. Relativity has shown a profound link between space and time, unveiling a startling unity of mass and energy. Quantum mechanics has revealed that motion entails spatial and temporal periodicity, leading to

Effective interactions in soft condensed matter physics

Physics Reports, 2001
Abstract In this work, we present a review of recently achieved progress in the field of soft condensed matter physics, and in particular on the study of the static properties of solutions or suspensions of colloidal particles. The latter are macromolecular entities with typical sizes ranging from 1 nm to 1 μm and their suspension typically ...

Soft Condensed Matter in Pharmaceutical Design

Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2006
In recent years pharmaceutical design has been facing the needs expressed by new therapeutic methodologies such as gene therapy, targeted delivery and closely related diagnostic fields as contrast enhancing agents for ultrasonic investigations. In this context pharmaceutical research has diversified the efforts toward a more integrated approach where ...

Soft condensed matter: where physics meets biology

Physics World, 2001
The techniques used to study various forms of soft condensed matter can be applied to living systems, but there are differences in the approaches of physicists and biologists.

Passionate about soft condensed matter

Physics World, 1997
When I was a lecturer at Sheffield University in the UK in 1992, the staff of our new Molecular Materials Centre heard that Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, who had just been awarded the 1991 Nobel Prize for Physics, was doing a roadshow of talks in schools around France.

Soft Condensed Matter

2017
Abstract Soft condensed matter is a very suitable system to be investigated with a probe of “neutron.” Typical energy range associated with soft condensed matter is tens of kJ (or a few meV), which is of the same order as those of cold neutrons. In addition, soft condensed matter consists of organic compounds and hence inevitably contains hydrogen ...

Order and chaos in soft condensed matter

Pramana, 2006
Soft matter, like colloidal suspensions and surfactant gels, exhibit strong response to modest external perturbations. This paper reviews our recent experiments on the nonlinear flow behaviour of surfactant worm-like micellar gels. A rich dynamic behaviour exhibiting regular, quasi-periodic, intermittency and chaos is observed.
