Insights from soft condensed matter

Reviews of Modern Physics, 1999
The physicist’s method of reflection about the world has, especially in this century, opened our eyes to the world as have few activities in history. Relativity has shown a profound link between space and time, unveiling a startling unity of mass and energy. Quantum mechanics has revealed that motion entails spatial and temporal periodicity, leading to

Effective interactions in soft condensed matter physics

Physics Reports, 2001
Abstract In this work, we present a review of recently achieved progress in the field of soft condensed matter physics, and in particular on the study of the static properties of solutions or suspensions of colloidal particles. The latter are macromolecular entities with typical sizes ranging from 1 nm to 1 μm and their suspension typically ...

Order and chaos in soft condensed matter

Pramana, 2006
Soft matter, like colloidal suspensions and surfactant gels, exhibit strong response to modest external perturbations. This paper reviews our recent experiments on the nonlinear flow behaviour of surfactant worm-like micellar gels. A rich dynamic behaviour exhibiting regular, quasi-periodic, intermittency and chaos is observed.

Soft condensed matter: where physics meets biology

Physics World, 2001
The techniques used to study various forms of soft condensed matter can be applied to living systems, but there are differences in the approaches of physicists and biologists.

The Oxford Handbook of Soft Condensed Matter

2015
Abstract This Handbook serves both as an introduction and an overview of the field of soft condensed matter. The discussion covers topics ranging from the fundamentals of colloid science to the principles and action of surfactants, modern directions of research in liquid crystals, and the key properties of foams.

Passionate about soft condensed matter

Physics World, 1997
When I was a lecturer at Sheffield University in the UK in 1992, the staff of our new Molecular Materials Centre heard that Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, who had just been awarded the 1991 Nobel Prize for Physics, was doing a roadshow of talks in schools around France.

A Cocktail of Soft Condensed Matter

2000
Soft condensed matter physics has evolved within the last two decades into a thriving field of inquiry. Arguably, it is unique amongst all other fields in physics in the diversity of the topics it encompasses. You just have to have a look at the subjects to be covered in this School to convince yourself.

What Is Soft Condensed Matter ?

2000
A well identified community of physicists has established itself over the last thirty years, which was present in the 1999 Geilo Institute. Looking back at the themes of the 14 previous institutes, it is easy to recognize constant themes throughout the meetings as well as a drift away from the initial ones.

EMERGENT PHENOMENA IN CONDENSED MATTER, SOFT MATTER AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS

2021
Physical systems composed of a large number of reciprocally interacting constituents provide the natural context for the rise of emergent phenomena. Despite the intrinsic difficulty in providing a mathematical definition of what is meant for ?emergence? (see [Baas, in Langton, Alife III, Santa Fe Studies in the Sciences of Complexity, Proc. Volume XVII,
