The homotopy groups of condensed matter physics
Journal of Mathematical Physics, 1978The classes of distinct point and line defects in ordered media and the laws governing their combination, are determined by the fundamental group of the order parameter space π1, the second homotopy group π2, and the group of automorphisms induced in π2 by the action of π1. A simple algorithm is given for computing all of these algebraic structures for

Computer Simulation Studies in Condensed-Matter Physics: An Introduction [PDF]
The fundamental role played by computer simulation studies in many areas of condensed matter physics is now well accepted. The “status report” on this topic contained in this volume is the result of presentations and discussion that took place during the 16th Annual Workshop at the Center for Simulational Physics.

Geometry in Condensed Matter Physics
1990The subject of geometry has become an important ingredient in condensed matter physics. It appears not only to describe, but also to explain structures and their properties. There are two aspects to using geometry: the visual and intuitive understanding, which fosters an immediate grasp of the objects one studies, and the abstract tendency so well ...
