Simulated elephant foraging alters tree root exudation rates: Species‐specific responses and implications for belowground carbon dynamics in tropical forests

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Asian elephants play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning, and their interactions with plants influence above‐ and belowground carbon cycling. We tested whether their mechanically destructive foraging triggers short‐term, stress‐induced shifts in tree root exudation, an underappreciated pathway linking herbivory to belowground carbon processes.

Informing the potential of mature temperate forests as natural climate solutions: Changed fine root biomass and morphology under elevated CO2

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The land carbon sink absorbs approximately 25% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, with forests accounting for most. Managing forests as Natural Climate Solutions is therefore a societal imperative, requiring models of where and how long carbon resides within these ecosystems. We investigated the effects of elevated CO2 on fine roots, the primary source of

Experimental dissection of phenotypic variation for quantitative disease resistance in canola (Brassica napus) – Leptosphaeria maculans interactions

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates how quantitative resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans in canola is experimentally estimated through multi‐environment replicated trials measuring crown canker severity. Genotype, environment and pathogen sources feed into phenotyping, followed by variance partitioning using mixed models and beta regression to ...

Impact of Packaging and Recycling Systems on Material Recirculation: A Stage‐Decomposition Model

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, EarlyView.
A system‐level view emerges from decomposing recycling into four stages (participation, collection, sorting and process yield), diagnosing constraints and targeting interventions. Cumulative equivalent uses (CEUs) quantify long‐term retention, revealing marginal improvements at high baselines generate disproportionately larger gains than low‐baseline ...

Ensemble reliability and the signal‐to‐noise paradox in ECMWF subseasonal forecasts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We derive a general expression for the ratio of predictable components (RPC) in terms of correlation, spread–error ratio, and total variance ratio. Physical constraints on the admissible solutions (i.e., real‐valued and non‐negative variances) provide a mechanism to identify statistically paradoxical sample combinations of reliability and correlation ...
