Specular Reflection Leads to Maximum Reduction in Thermal Conductivity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In contrast to established work that use diffuse surface scattering as the mechanism to lower the thermal conductivities, we show that the largest reduction of heat conduction in thin films is achieved via specular scattering. Our results create a new paradigm for heat conduction manipulation since smooth surfaces , in contrast to rough surfaces , are ...

Optimal SNP filtering strategies for pedigree reconstruction: A case study with wild red‐spotted masu salmon population

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In this article, we tested optimal SNP filtering strategies for accurate parentage assignment and pedigree reconstruction for a wild population of red‐spotted masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae. We found that mid‐point filtering in terms of call rate and minor allele frequency performs well for pedigree reconstruction.

The temperature distribution during heating in hot plate welding process

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2019
Most of the industrial machines use the belt transmission for the power transfer. These mechanisms often use the round belts with a few millimetres in diameter, which are made of the thermoplastic elastomers, especially the polyurethane. Their production

Electrical Conductivity of Nanoscale Hydrophobic Porous Media: Surface Charge Density and Heterogeneous Pore Structure [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Electrical conductivity is an inherent property of a hydrophobic porous media (HPM) and has critical applications. This research aims to provide a solution for predicting the electrical conductivity of nanoscale HPM with heterogeneous pore structure. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are compared with the modified Poisson-Boltzmann (MPB) model for ...

Conduction Disturbances After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Current Status and Future Perspectives

open access: yesCirculation, 2017
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become a well-accepted option for treating patients with aortic stenosis at intermediate to high or prohibitive surgical risk.

Evaluating the origin and spread of spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) in Japan

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
The invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is native to China and is a serious economic pest in the Republic of Korea and the United States, though it is not considered a pest in Japan. We established a distribution map of L. delicatula in Japan through a comprehensive review of published literature and citizen science reports and analyzed ...

Transport Properties of Gramicidin A Ion Channel in a Free-Standing Lipid Bilayer Filled With Oil Inclusions

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2020
Ion channels are key proteins in mammalian cell membranes. They have a central role in the physiology of excitable cells such as neurons, muscle, and heart cells. They also play a crucial role in kidney physiology.

Anisotropic Thermal Conduction in Supernova Remnants: Relevance to Hot Gas Filling Factors in the Magnetized ISM

open access: yes, 2006
We explore the importance of anisotropic thermal conduction in the evolution of supernova remnants via numerical simulations. The mean temperature of the bubble of hot gas is decreased by a factor of ~3 compared to simulations without thermal conduction,

Comparison of kinship‐identification methods for robust stock assessment using close‐kin mark–recapture data for Pacific bluefin tuna

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In this study, we compared three methods for kinship identification using different algorithms in samples of wild Pacific bluefin tuna and generated genotyping data. The three methods resulted in different numbers of inferred kinship pairs for both generated and actual data. Particularly for the half‐sibling pairs, considerable number of false‐positive

Quantum Conductance Oscillations in Metal/Molecule/Metal Switches at Room Temperature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Conductance switching has been reported in many molecular junction devices, but in most cases has not been convincingly explained. We investigate conductance switching in Pt/stearic acid monolayer/Ti devices using pressure-modulated conductance microscopy.
