Cone Beam CT vs. Fan Beam CT: A Comparison of Image Quality and Dose Delivered Between Two Differing CT Imaging Modalities

open access: yesCureus, 2016
A comparison of image quality and dose delivered between two differing computed tomography (CT) imaging modalities—fan beam and cone beam—was performed.

Description of the skull, braincase, and dentition of Moschognathus whaitsi (Dinocephalia, Tapinocephalia), and its palaeobiological and behavioral implications

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract A subadult Moschognathus whaitsi from the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, was scanned using synchrotron radiation X‐ray computed tomography (SRXCT). Its subadult state allowed the cranial bones and teeth to be identified and individually reconstructed in 3D.

Strategies in cone beam CT inspection of cylindrical objects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Axial symmetry is a feature that often occurs in industrial parts. Analysing these with X-ray computed tomography (CT), cylindrical coordinates about an axis fixed to the object form the most natural base to check certain characteristics of objects that ...

Fused Analytical and Iterative Reconstruction (AIR) via modified proximal forward-backward splitting: a FDK-based iterative image reconstruction example for CBCT

open access: yes, 2016
This work is to develop a general framework, namely analytical iterative reconstruction (AIR) method, to incorporate analytical reconstruction (AR) method into iterative reconstruction (IR) method, for enhanced CT image quality and reconstruction ...

Imaging artifacts of Onyx and PHIL on conventional CT, cone-beam CT and MRI in an animal model

open access: yesInterventional Neuroradiology, 2018
Background and purpose A frequently reported drawback of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer-based liquid embolic agents is the production of artifacts in diagnostic imaging.

The revision of baphetids from the Middle Pennsylvanian of the Czech Republic: Morphology, ontogeny, palaeoecology, and the reassessment of the phylogeny of Baphetoidea

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The baphetoids represent a clade of the Carboniferous stem‐tetrapods (Middle Mississippian—Middle Pennsylvanian) with a characteristic extension of the orbits into antorbital vacuities, which formed keyhole‐shaped openings on the skull. The more derived baphetids were crocodile‐like piscivores frequently occurring in coal‐bearing lacustrine ...

Accuracy of radiotherapy dose calculations based on cone-beam CT: comparison of deformable registration and image correction based methods

open access: yesPhysics in Medicine and Biology, 2018
Radiotherapy dose calculations based on cone-beam CT (CBCT) images can be inaccurate due to unreliable Hounsfield units (HU) in the CBCT. Deformable image registration of planning CT images to CBCT, and direct correction of CBCT image values are two ...

The tiger salamander as a promising alternative model organism to the axolotl for fracture healing and regenerative biology research

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Scientists have been captivated by the ability to regenerate, focusing on uncovering the mechanisms of epimorphic regeneration and applying them to human medicine. The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) has become the most intensively studied model in tetrapod regeneration research, particularly concerning limb regeneration.

Metallic materials in the exomass impair cone beam CT voxel values.

open access: yesDento maxillo facial radiology, 2018
OBJECTIVES To assess the influence of artefacts arising from metallic materials in the exomass on cone beam CT (CBCT) voxel values. METHODS CBCT scans were taken of a phantom composed of 16 tubes filled with a homogeneous hyperdense solution and ...

Statistical shape modeling of the human inner ear through micro‐computed tomography imaging

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
In this study, 54 cadaveric temporal bone specimens underwent high‐resolution micro‐CT imaging. Images were semi‐automatically segmented and converted to 3D surface mesh models for morphological measurement and analysis. Statistical shape models were created for the inner ear, cochlea, and vestibular system, as well as for sex‐ and side‐based subgroups.
