Confined quantum systems: The parabolically confined hydrogen atom

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 1998
Summary: We investigate a hydrogen-like atom (or any other system with a Coulomb potential) confined to a space which is bounded by a paraboloid. The nucleus of the atom resides at the focus of the paraboloid and we require the electronic wavefunction to vanish on the paraboloid.

On the variation of polarizability and hyperpolarizability of a confined atom with the strength of confinement: a case study of a helium atom

Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, 2010
This paper is devoted to the study of variation of linear polarizability and nonlinear hyperpolarizability of a helium atom confined in an impenetrable spherical box with the strength of confinement. The calculation of polarizability and hyperpolarizabilities has been performed within density-functional theory (DFT). The ground-state densities required

Atom confinement in helicoidal cavities

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1993
The interaction between an atom and a neutral helicoidal cavity is calculated for varying parameters—helix pitch and radius, matter density on the helix, number of helices schematizing the cavity,... . General conditions for the applicability of the continuum approximation, for the occurrence of geometrical confinement leading to atom supermobility in ...

Shell-confined hydrogen atom

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2005
Calculations of electronic energy and static dipole polarizability are reported for the hydrogen atom in the ns states (n=1–6) confined between two impenetrable concentric spheres of inner and outer radii placed at the locations of the radial nodes corresponding to the free hydrogen ns (n=2–7) orbitals.

On the shell‐confined atom problem

International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, 2018
AbstractThe properties of spherically symmetric, one‐electron atomic systems are analyzed for the systems where the electron is placed in the region between two impenetrable concentric spheres of radii Rint and Rext. The changes in the structure of the energy levels of low‐lying electron states and the corresponding variations in radial wave functions ...

Laser cooling and confining of atoms

Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1985
Using six optical beams (+ and − directions on three orthogonal axes) tuned slightly to the red of resonance it is possible to cool sodium atoms to a few hundred microkelvin. The cooling occurs because the laser radiation pressure creates a damping force which reduces the atomic velocities to a rms value of ~60 cm/s, determined by random scattering. In

Spontaneous emission of a confined atom

SPIE Proceedings, 1993
Modifications of a natural emission line of a free atom, due to its concentrated center of mass wave-function, have been studied. The Doppler shifts, associated with the corresponding momenta distribution of the wave packet, are responsible for the shape of the emitted line.

Confinement induced binding of noble gas atoms

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2014
The stability of Ngn@B12N12 and Ngn@B16N16 systems is assessed through a density functional study and ab initio simulation. Although they are found to be thermodynamically unstable with respect to the dissociation of individual Ng atoms and parent cages, ab initio simulation reveals that except Ne2@B12N12 they are kinetically stable to retain their ...

Hydrogen atom confined to an ellipsoid

Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, 2001
We have analysed the properties of a hydrogen atom at the focus of a confining, prolate ellipsoid. This system is separable in terms of elliptic coordinates, and has the unusual property that the solution is a product of two identical functions of elliptic coordinates.
