Energy characteristics of saturated Jurassic sandstone in western China under different stress paths

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering
To study the energy evolution and failure characteristics of saturated sandstone under unloading conditions, rock unloading tests under different stress paths were conducted.

Experimental Determination of Elastic Anisotropy of Berea Sandstone, Chicopee Shale and Chelmsford Granite [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
We use the ultrasonic transmission method to measure P-, SH-, and SV-wave velocities for Chelmsford Granite, Chicopee Shale, and Berea Sandstone in different directions up to 1000 bars confining pressure.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Evidence of Raleigh-Hertz surface waves and shear stiffness anomaly in granular media

open access: yes, 2008
Due to the non-linearity of Hertzian contacts, the speed of sound in granular matter increases with pressure. Under gravity, the non-linear elastic description predicts that acoustic propagation is only possible through surface modes, called Rayleigh ...

Sedimentation of self-propelled Janus colloids: polarization and pressure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We study experimentally-using Janus colloids-and theoretically-using Active Brownian Particles- the sedimentation of dilute active colloids. We first confirm the existence of an exponential density profile.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

MICROSTRUCTURE OF SHEAR ZONES IN FONTAINEBLEAU SANDSTONE [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
On the basis of image analysis, porosity and grain-size changes have been studied inside the shear bands formed in triaxial testing on a Fontainebleau sandstone. For this rock the shear band is characterized by a white coloration visible to the naked eye.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
