Congenital chylothorax treated with octreotide

The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 2005
Congenital chylothorax is the accumulation of lymphatic fluid within the pleural space. Cases unresponsive to conservative management usually require surgery. Octreotide has been used successfully to treat post-traumatic chylothoraces in the pediatric and adult population.

Congenital Chylothorax

Applied Radiology
Abstract Congenital chylothorax should be considered in neonates with symptoms and imaging consistent with pleural effusion, but analysis of the pleural effusion is necessary to confirm chylothorax. Lymphangiogram can identify a leak or highlight a structural lymphatic anomaly and is useful in guiding therapy.

Congenital chylothorax and mediastinal neuroblastoma

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1991
This is the first reported association of congenital chylothorax and mediastinal neuroblastoma in a newborn infant. The infant exhibited features of both congenital and acquired chylothorax. Resolution of the chylothorax occurred following ligation of thoracic duct after failure of conservative management with multiple thoracentesis and chest tube ...

Postoperative Chylothorax in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

European Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2010
The mechanisms responsible for postoperative chylothorax in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) patients remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the clinical features of CDH that may contribute to an association with postoperative chylothorax.198 neonates with CDH, in whom surgical repair of a diaphragmatic defect was performed ...

The use of octreotide to treat congenital chylothorax

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2006
We report the use of the octreotide (a somatostatin analogue) in the treatment of idiopathic congenital chylothorax in a patient with Turner's syndrome who had previously failed conservative medical therapy. The patient improved rapidly after initiation of octreotide with complete resolution after 5 days of continuous therapy (10 microg/kg per hour).
