Digital money can be implemented efficiently by avoiding consensus. However, no-consensus implementations have drawbacks, as they cannot support smart contracts, and (even more fundamentally) they cannot deal with conflicting transactions. We present a novel protocol that combines the benefits of an asynchronous, broadcast-based digital currency, with ...

Non-consensual and Consensual Non-monogamy in Norway [PDF]

The unbeatability of a consensus protocol, introduced by Halpern, Moses and Waarts in 2001, is a stronger notion of optimality than the accepted notion of early stopping protocols. Using a novel knowledge-based analysis, this paper derives the first practical unbeatable consensus protocols in the literature, for the standard synchronous message-passing

Uniform consensus is harder than consensus [PDF]
Summary: We compare the consensus and uniform consensus problems in synchronous systems. In contrast to consensus, uniform consensus is not solvable with byzantine failures. This still holds for the omission failure model if a majority of processes may be faulty.
