Modeling the Consequences of Bioterrorism Response [PDF]

open access: yesMilitary Medicine, 2001
Military medicine is playing important roles in preparing for the possibility of a covert biological attack on the United States. The objective of this work was to develop a spreadsheet tool that allows planners to compare the consequences of different speeds of response to a covert bioterrorist attack using the metric of preventable deaths.

Models of modular inflation and their phenomenological consequences [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, 2008
We study models of modular inflation of the form expected to arise from low energy effective actions of superstring theories. We argue on general grounds that the most likely models of modular slow-roll inflation are small field models in which the inflaton moves about a Planck distance from an extremum of the potential.

A level set based method for fixing overhangs in 3D printing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
3D printers based on the Fused Decomposition Modeling create objects layer-by-layer dropping fused material. As a consequence, strong overhangs cannot be printed because the new-come material does not find a suitable support over the last deposed layer ...

On the consequences of model misspecification in logistic regression. [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Health Perspectives, 1990
Logistic regression models are commonly used to study the association between a binary response variable and an exposure variable. Besides the exposure of interest, other covariates are frequently included in the fitted model in order to control for their effects on outcome.

Means and covariance functions for geostatistical compositional data: an axiomatic approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This work focuses on the characterization of the central tendency of a sample of compositional data. It provides new results about theoretical properties of means and covariance functions for compositional data, with an axiomatic perspective.

Modeling Mental Qualities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Conscious experiences are characterized by mental qualities, such as those involved in seeing red, feeling pain, or smelling cinnamon. The standard framework for modeling mental qualities represents them via points in geometrical spaces, where distances ...

A COMPUTATIONAL MODEL OF SELECTION BY CONSEQUENCES [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2004
Darwinian selection by consequences was instantiated in a computational model that consisted of a repertoire of behaviors undergoing selection, reproduction, and mutation over many generations. The model in effect created a digital organism that emitted behavior continuously.
