Indigenous peoples as sentinels of change in human‐wildlife relationships: Conservation status of mountain goats in Kitasoo Xai'xais territory and beyond

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, 2022
Local people can act as sentinels for change, especially for wildlife populations not monitored by centralized governments. Responding to concern expressed by the Kitasoo Xai'xais (KX) First Nation over a decline in mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

The current state of Black Stork Ciconia nigra in Armenia

open access: yesRivista Italiana di Ornitologia - Research in Ornithology
The state of Black Stork Ciconia nigra in Armenia was last updated in 2009. Since then, the knowledge of the species significantly increased, and there is a need for an update on its conservation status. Results of 2003-2024 data collection and analysis

Importance of Genetics in the Interpretation of Favourable Conservation Status

open access: yes, 2009
“Favourable Conservation Status” (FCS) is a central concept in the biodiversity conservation legislation of the European Union (EU). Here, we highlight the importance of incorporating aspects of conservation genetics in interpretation of this concept ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Pangolin distribution and conservation status in Bangladesh

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2017
Asian pangolins are a highly-threatened species group, mainly due to the perceived medicinal value of their scales. Increased demand from China has resulted in pangolins being the most trafficked mammal in the world. Three pangolin species are reported to occur in Bangladesh: Manis pentadactyla, M. crassicaudata, and M. javanica.

Can methods applied in medicine be used to summarize and disseminate conservation research?

open access: yes, 2004
To ensure that the best scientific evidence is available to guide conservation action, effective mechanisms for communicating the results of research are necessary.

“Heaven” of Data Deficient Species: The Conservation Status of the Endemic Amphibian Fauna of Vietnam

open access: yes, 2023
Predicting the true status of Data Deficient (DD) species is a prominent theme in recent conservation biology, but there still is much debate regarding the conservation approach that should be used for DD taxa and no definitive conclusions are yet ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...
