Status substitution and conspicuous consumption
This paper adapts ideas from social identity theory to set out a new framework for modelling conspicuous consumption. Agents derive status from their own conspicuous consumption and from belonging to an identity group with high conspicuous consumption. Importantly, these two sources of status are substitutes.

Approximately 15 percent of households have a negative or zero net worth, leaving them vulnerable to financial insecurity at retirement. Some are vulnerable at retirement, in part, due to their lack of saving. However, some are also at risk because of their rates of consumption, relative to their income.

Paramagnetic‐rim lesions are a novel diagnostic marker in multiple sclerosis (MS) and are associated with poor prognosis due to their link with chronic inflammation and disease progression. Analyzing 46 postmortem MS cases, researchers found no iron rims in 67 white matter and 85 grey matter spinal cord lesions, despite most being active.
