Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Design of the Converter Prototype for Powering the Hydrogen Electrolyzer

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Electrolysis, which uses direct current, is the most common way to produce hydrogen gas. However, its efficiency is very low, about 70%. The method used when current pulses are used by electrolysis is called pulse electrolysis. According to other studies,

Characterization and Morphology of Copper Powder Particles as a Function of Different Electrolytic Regimes

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2010
The effect different deposition regimes (constant and reversing currents), on the powdered copper electrodeposits morphology were investigated. The results obtained in constant regimes were compared with those obtained in reversing regimes.

ON THE ESTIMATION OF THE CURRENT VALUE OF THE COSMOLOGICAL CONSTANT [PDF]

open access: yesModern Physics Letters A, 2003
We advance the viewpoint that, only relevant modes of the vacuum fluctuations, namely, with wavelengths conditioned by the size, homogeneity, geometry and topology of the Universe, do contribute to the cosmological constant. A formula is derived which relates the cosmological constant with the size of the Universe and the three fundamental constants ...

Ten reasons NOT to fix the numerical value of the Avogadro constant

open access: yes, 2011
This discussion paper, circulated in advance of the 17th meeting of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance, addresses the proposed redefinition of the mole in terms of a fixed numerical value for the Avogadro constant.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Time dependent dielectric breakdown and stress induced leakage current characteristics of 8Å EOT HfO2 N-MOSFETS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this work we present the time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) characteristics of LaO capped HfO2 layers with an equivalent oxide thickness of 8Å. The layers show maximum operating voltages in excess of 1V. Such high reliability can be attributed

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells
