Translating into Stone: The Monument to the Constitution of Cadiz in Saint Augustine, Florida

St Augustine, Florida, most likely has the only surviving monument to the Constitution of Cadiz erected in the Americas. Constructed in 1813 and 1814, the monument was the most expensive public work in the city, then the capital of the Spanish province of East Florida.

Between 1820 and 1822, New Spain transitioned from a colony held by the Spanish Crown to part of the doceañista liberal system, after the re-establisment of the Constitution of 1812 in May 1820. This triggered an independence process in February 1821 that was completed by the Independence Act in September the same year.
