Cytological variations in the constitutive heterochromatin of Microtus agrestis
Chromosoma, 1971In the field vole, Microtus agrestis, most of the constitutive heterochromatin is localized in the giant chromosomes. A detailed examination of a large number of adult cell types reveals that this chromatin is actually present as a heterochromatic fiber in all interphase nuclei. Depending upon the cell types, however, the fiber shows varying degrees of

Lateral asymmetry of constitutive heterochromatin in human chromosomes
Human Genetics, 1979Variations in lateral asymmetry of constitutive heterochromatin were studied in 30 normal individuals with reference to the chromosomal regions 1q12, 9q12, 15p11, 16q12 and Yq12. The technique consisted of growing human lymphocytes for one cell cycle in BrdU, staining with 33258 Hoechst, exposing them to UV light, treating them with 2 x SSC, and ...

Using DAPI staining after pretreatment with distamycin A we detected a familial deficiency of chromosome 16 heterochromatin. A distinct positively staining band, however, was seen after C-banding. Thus, by using these different heterochromatin staining methods, heterogeneity of the constitutive heterochromatin in the centromeric region of human ...

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 1994
The Drosophila HP1 gene contains a highly conserved sequence, the chromobox, which can be used to isolate HP1-like genes from both mouse (M31 and M32) and man (HSM1) (Singh et al., 1991). Here we report that a monoclonal antibody (MoAb) raised against the M31 protein recognises a 26-kDa protein in murine and human nuclear extracts ...

Simultaneous Staining of the Spindle Apparatus and Constitutive Heterochromatin
Stain Technology, 1974In nonhypotonically treated mitoses from tissue cultures grown on cover glasses, the constitutive heterochromatin as well as the spindle apparatus can be stained by a Giemsa technique for demonstrating repetitive DNA. Cells were treated with 0.015 M sodium chloride and 0.0015 M sodium citrate at 92 C for about 3 min, then with 03 M sodium chloride and ...

Constitutive Heterochromatin Polymorphisms in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, 1993The C-band heterochromatin polymorphisms of chromosomes 1, 9, and 16 were studied on peripheral lymphocytes of 67 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 50 control individuals. A statistically significant difference between patients and controls was found for large heterochromatin regions (level 3) of chromosomes 1 and 9 (P < 0.001) and ...

Heteromorphism of constitutive heterochromatin in carcinoma and dysplasia of the uterine cervix
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 1980Chromosomal heteromorphism in constitutive heterochromatin of chromosomes 1, 9 and 16 was studied in 8 patients with cervix cancer and 15 patients with cervix dysplasia. Tissue cultures (diploid fibroblasts) established from tumor biopsies as well as lymphocyte cultures were used for making C-banded chromosome preparations.

Complete deficiency of constitutive heterochromatin on a human chromosome 9
Human Genetics, 1979In cultured amniotic fluid cells a mediocentric chromosome 9 appeared to be completely deficient in constitutive heterochromatin when stained with distamycin A and DAPI. In addition, this deficient chromosome was found in a blood cell culture from the father. Both the father and the child after birth were phenotypically normal.

Constitutive heterochromatin and transposable elements in Drosophila melanogaster
1997Several families of transposable elements (TEs), most of them belonging to the retrotransposon category, are particularly enriched in Drosophila melanogaster constitutive heterochromatin. The enrichment of TE-homologous sequences into heterochromatin is not a peculiar feature of the Drosophila genome, but appears to be widespread among higher ...

Constitutive heterochromatin studies in patients with solid tumors
Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, 1986Constitutive heterochromatin of chromosomes 1, 9, and 16 was studied in 101 patients with solid tumors and 85 controls. Lymphocyte cultures were used for performing C-banded chromosome preparations. Two homologous chromosomes were regarded as heteromorphic when there was a 25% difference between their C-band size or when they fell into different ...
