Molecular dynamics study of contact mechanics: Contact area and interfacial separation from small to full contact [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We report a molecular dynamics study of the contact between a rigid solid with a randomly rough surface and an elastic block with a flat surface. We study the contact area and the interfacial separation from small contact (low load) to full contact (high

Sex Representation in US Stroke Clinical Trials: A Decade of Trends and Challenges

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Stroke remains a major cause of disability and mortality in the US, with significant sex‐based disparities, and females remain underrepresented in stroke clinical trials. We aimed to examine sex representation in US‐based stroke clinical trials, identify trial characteristics associated with higher female enrollment (≥ 50%), and ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Contact Area Shrinkage and Increase in Wavy Frictional Sliding Contacts

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids
The effect of material and geometric nonlinearity is often underestimated in contact mechanics. However, recent experiments reveal that classical linear models might fail to accurately predict key contact features, such as the contact area, in scenarios involving frictional sliding.

Simulation Model and Ultrasound Study for Engineering Interfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Friction and wear are experienced both in terms of machine operation and finance. They impact, amongst other things, energy consumption and material loss, product manufacture and component maintenance.

[18F]Fluorodeprenyl‐D2 PET as a Tool to Monitor Disease Activity in GAD65‐Ab Autoimmune Encephalitis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate [18F]fluorodeprenyl‐D2 ([18F]F‐DED) positron‐emission tomography (PET) imaging as a biomarker of disease activity in autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) associated with glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) antibodies. Methods [18F]F‐DED PET was performed in 25 GAD65‐AIE patients and 8 controls using dynamic (0–60 min) and ...

Unbinding of alpha chain of hemoglobin in sickle and normal structures

open access: yesJournal of Physics Communications
Sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder, is caused by a mutation of glutamic acid into valine in β chain of hemoglobin at the sixth residue, resulting in structural change of the entire hemoglobin molecule into a sickle shape.

The Tale of the Residual Tail: Insights From Continuous Intracranial Monitoring From Post‐Hippocampectomy Dynamics

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Subtotal hippocampal resection can leave residual hippocampal tissue, yet the immediate postoperative electrophysiologic evolution of such remnants is unknown. We describe a patient with drug‐resistant temporal lobe epilepsy in whom a hippocampal remnant was continuously monitored using a responsive neurostimulator (RNS) following subtotal ...

Causes and effects of Substratum, Superstratum and Adstratum influence, with reference to Tibeto-Burman languages

open access: yes, 2010
Language contact has become a major focus of inquiry in historical and typological linguistics in the last twenty years, spurred in a large part by the publication of Thomason & Kaufman (1988), which tried to make sense of a large amount of language ...
