Comparison between friction stir and submerged arc welding applied to joining DH36 and E36 shipbuilding steel

open access: yes, 2013
With the impending development of FSW tools for steel with useful lifetimes, attention has turned to the mechanical properties of the welds that can be made in a range of industrially significant steels.

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Multiphysics models for friction stir welding simulation

open access: yes, 2013
Purpose: The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process comprises of several highly coupled (and non-linear) physical phenomena: large plastic deformation, material flow transportation, mechanical stirring of the tool, tool-workpiece surface interaction ...

Analysis of a dry friction problem under small displacements: application to a bolted joint [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This study presents an analysis of the problem of macroscopic contact of steel upon steel with dry friction, in the specific case of a bolted joint. The configurations of these types of joints result in very small displacements and interface sliding ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Identification and model-based compensation of Striebeck friction

open access: yes, 2006
The paper deals with the measurement, identification and compensation of low velocity friction in positioning systems. The introduced algorithms are based on a linearized friction model, which can easily be introduced in tracking control algorithms ...

Determining the ability of a high payload robot to perform FSW applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper presents an experimental methodology to determine a Friction Stir Welding (FSW) means of production based on the experimental study of the tool / material mechanical interactions generated during the welding operation.
